Manos

Hi! My name is Manos. I discovered this forum a few weeks ago. There seems to be a collegial environment here, as well as worldwide representation. I'm happy to find Moldyoldie on the member list---he is a friend from another non-music forum. I hope to discuss music and learn from the accumulated knowledge of the members.

I collect LP's and CD's, and have a particular interest in early music. I probably favor HIP performances, though the things I enjoy about a performance don't seem to fall neatly into either camp. The last live performance I attended was the Stile Antico concert in Ann Arbor this winter. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

Hello Manos, and welcome.  There are a number of HIP fans here (including this one), so I'm sure you'll find some kindred spirits.  Have a good time.

Welcome, indeed, Manos!  We can never have too many HIPsters about.  Even moldy like HIP performances of Stockhausen!

Hi Manos, welcome from another Early Music fan.  My favorite "period instruments" are acapella voices doing Machaut, Dufay and di Lasso.

Hello Manos - welcome to the GMG Forum - I'm sure you've already found some threads of interest!  :D

Actually, I grew up in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan from 1964-1971 (undergrad + medical school) - seems like a LONG time ago!  Met my future wife there - we married in 1970 (BOY, will be 40 yrs come July -  :o) - have fun here!  Dave  :)

Hello, Manos! I lived in Canton, Michigan from 2001-2005 and while there enjoyed Ann Arbor's luxurious concert scene. The University Musical Society is just phenomenal; I got to see Simon Shaheen and al-Qantara (Arab jazz), the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, the Canadian Brass and a bunch of other great performers.

Marc

Welcome!

Ann Arbor!

A friend of mine once went to college there!

(For what it's worth.)

And wasn't Ann Arbor the place where once the Paul McCartney is dead rumor suddenly gained a serious impact, because of an article of Ann Arbor's Fred LaBour in the Michigan Daily? ;D

I saw Fred LaBour some five years ago in a TV documentary, walking on cowboy boots and entering a large vinyl and cd discount .... that shop looked great! Dunno about the classical collection though, 'cause Fred took the cameraman straight to the Beatles' larder.

Manos

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Franco, I am familiar with Di Lasso/Lassus and Dufay, but not Machaut. So you know what I'll be searching for in the forum tonight!

I've never heard of Fred LaBour and his role in the McCartney rumor, Marc. I know of WKNR announcer Russ Gibb's involvement, and the 'car crash' of sorts caused by WABC's Roby Yonge, derailing his career. I wonder which record shop you saw in that film. All of our new record shops have closed. We're fortunate to have four used shops, two of which have classical records and CD's for sale. It's funny how the business model that seemed shaky 20 years ago is the one that survived.

Yeah, especially the ones using period potentiometers! :P Y'know, the ones with tubes.

Manos--you have a great opportunity tonight (Sat, Mar 20): MTT & the San Francisco Symphony are performing Mahler's 2nd Symphony in Ann Arbor at Hill Auditorium.

I am the aforementioned wife. U of M is a great environment. My father was class of 1936--he often reminisced about his college days, up til the day he died.

A husband and wife both post here? I assume that's an oddity, but a nice one.

As I wrote to David, I can't make the Hill Auditorium concert because my son is playing in a city-wide school concert tonight. While Mahler is not my favorite, it would still be a great opportunity to hear a nationally known orchestra right in town. (The second opportunity this year, actually---the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was here in January.)

I noticed that Naxos has released an Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra performance of music by Paul Fetler, an unknown name to me. Nevertheless, it's a major milestone for Arie Lipsky and the orchestra.

Yes, Manos, as you may have already figured out Sonicman & Harpo are husband & wife, who met in Ann Arbor in the late 1960s - a couple of husband-wife teams have posted here in the past but we are likely the 'most active' at the moment?  :D

I've been a 'long term' member, but encouraged her to join because many of the treads (esp. in the Diner) I felt might be of interest to her and there are plenty of fascinating people in this forum - she does not post as much as me, but is glad to be a part of the forum - Dave (i.e. Sonicman;  wife = Susan, i.e. Harpo) -  :)

Well, I dunno exactly which year the documentary was filmed, so maybe the shop does not exist anymore.

About Fred LaBour: here's a funny link about 'the case' called Who buried Paul?. Fred's artice is mentioned, too .... among many many other things. ;D

This is how Fred looks now (he also wore a cowboy hat in the documentary):
