MISHUGINA

My dad dropped a bombshell saying we might go to Vienna for a trip and I thought a visit to Musikverein is a must. I read the website saying limited tickets are only on available by phone call one week before concert. Anybody had the experience of getting a ticket to VPO in Musikverein?

Undutchable

Never had any luck with the VPO, but a more doable option would be to see and hear an opera at the Vienna state opera.
I managed to book a couple of seats for the flying dutchman a couple of years ago - a very fine performance. The day before I went for a tour of the opera house. There I learned that you can get standing only tickets for 2 euros. I watched  Rosenkavalier  for the price of a coffee, although standing for more than 3 hours was no fun.

Also look at the Volksoper schedule.  Even a FLEDERMAUS there is going to be different than anywhere else in the world, even though you may feel the audience wanting to hum the entire score with the cast.  It's "home" for those works.
