By the way, I'm reading NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN so I can maybe figure out what that ending was all about.

Based on only the movie, I'd suggest following the random theme and chance, as reflected in the coin toss, and what Tommy Lee was saying about unforseen events.  (such as the car wreck at the end).  This randomness, for me, also is the darkness in the dream described at the end.  Anyway-- that is what made sense for me-- but I had the epiphany several hours after the movie was over.
