Currently I am in Chicago, trying to get a family member back to Moscow. He was supposed to go yesterday;  then he was supposed to go today; now he's supposed to go tomorrow. But we don't know, do we?

It feels like Groundhog Day. Anyone else affected by this?

I'm in Norway. All air traffic, domestic, international, impossible for the second day in a row. And we Norwegians fly a lot.

I find it hard to believe, but it seems that in Iceland they are happy to have this distraction from their financial woes.

Folks, it has to have been sorted out bu the 28th, I am supposed to be on a flight that day.

My concern exactly!  :(

Seemingly the cloud may descend to ground level in the UK, but there is silence so far on any health issues inherent if that happens. The cloud has fragments of glass in it, which is want makes it so dangerous to jet engines and cockpit windows, how will lungs fare?

Good point Mike. What happened to the 'brilliant sunsets' we were supposed to experience? British airspace has been empty now for several days. We live on the flightpath for Heathrow and Gatwick, so it's unusually quiet here.

I read in the local paper that there was an eruption in Iceland in 1780 which, if it happened today, would disrupt air travel for 6 months.  Maybe we need to get those old ocean liners out of dry-dock.   ???

If you could re-route to Vienna or Zagreb it may be possible to get rail connections to Moscow.

Vienna is in the thick of it.  From US to Jining China, pick up Trans-Mongolian Railoard, connect to Trans Siberian Railroad, to Moscow.

That's for sure! There are long lines at the main train stations here in Vienna. Some are having to wait at least two hours in line just to buy a ticket. But once you do buy a ticket, god knows how long it'll be before your train actually pulls out of the station.  :(

I just saw the latest story on the late night news here (morning in London, etc.) and hadn't noticed the direction of travel for the cloud before.  Cover and seal your vinyl, that dust is very fine.    I remember traveling though the Mt. St. Helens area after that blast and it was quite nasty though not as large as this one.
