George and I were talking last night and discussing what happens when you have to move your cds or reorganize them.  One thing that happens is you find a few that have not been played in possibly a decade.  This thread is dedicated to just that.  Dig out an old gem and post it here.  If 10 years is a bit much for some youngins' here, a few years will do. ;D
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

M. Behrens Final Ballet

Several years ago, as part of a plan to move to Europe, I began getting rid of things. House, car, books, LPs (after burning CDs from many of them), on down to CD jewel cases.

I got rid of a few CDs, only, keeping even ones I didn't enjoy at the time, thinking "maybe some day."

The some day came the other day for M. Behrens Final Ballet, a piece full of all the LP sounds (and more) that I'd loved even before I first heard Christian Marclay.

Maybe it was too regular. Too much the same stuff going on for too long. I dunno. Sounds fine now!

Tavener Protecting Veil - his greatest score and truly Sui Generis I think. Must listen again.

I listen to all of my recordings 3-4 times a year.  If I don't like a disc I sell it, if I don't like a music file I delete it.  Nothing goes unplayed!  :)

I bought some discs recently of Anneliese Rothenberger in bits and bobs of German operetta. This threw me back onto a set of the compete Wiener Blut that I have not listened to for at least 10 years. It has Schwarzkopf and Gedda and Kunz all singing as though from another world and taking us, in vocal style and ensemble, at least stylistically, back before WWII to a never-never land of innocence. It is a warm hearted and delightful piece, overshadowed by Strauss's masterpiece Fledermaus. But it is well worth the diversion. It came up fresh as paint.

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Sarge,  I hear you.  My number may well be north of 4000 conservatively speaking, which include LP's and tapes ...
