On next Friday April 30, the Dallas Opera,in its state of the art new opera house,is set to give the world premiere of Jake Heggie's operatic version of Melville's classic whaling novel Moby Dick.
Ben Heppner will create the role of captain Ahab, and the conductor will be Patrick Summers. There's an article on the new opera in the arts and leisure section of this week's New York Times, and you can read it on the newspaper's website.
Heggie has had recent success with  his opera "Deam Man Walking",based on the anti-death penalty book by sister Helen Prejean.
The new opera sounds interesting, but Moby Dick doesn't sing. Only time will tell if it's a whale of an opera .

I would be very interested to hear reports from anyone who has seen this production :)

You can read reviews form the New York Times and other newspapers, such as the one in Dallas for which Scott Cantrell is critic. The reviews were not bad,and the audience was from all reports very enthusiastic. Check their websites.

Thank, I caught some of the reviews, including Midgette's - but she barely mentioned Heggie's music, and focussed more on the piece as eye-candy.  I wonder if other houses will take the piece up - either in co-production, or in their own stagings?  DEAD MAN WALKING enjoyed enviable success in that regard.
