What a great vocalist!
I saw him in concert in 2002, and then a week later ran into him in Canada when his band was checking into a hotel.  Acted totally cool, courteous.

Mercury?

Thanks to this thread, I discovered that he was the one who 'created' and popularised the hand gesture -- the Devil's Horns, as it seems to be known -- among the fans of the genre.

Gene Simmons says he invented it.

Gene Simmons is a fraud and a phony. Dio got the hand gesture from his Italian grandmother. Its the so called malocchio, the evil eye, the sign to keep hill fortune at bay. He started using it out of a whim and it just caught on. Good singer. Firm and powerful tone, and nice control. His best work can be found in the recordings he made during the late 70s and early 80s.

Also, look at this, a Dio song from 1972:
