Hello, GMG!

I'm happy to tell you that I'll be heading to UVic School of music (majoring in the comprehensive program, which is the most diverse and could lead to many future paths) this fall. I'm 18, and will be graduating from high school next week.

UVic was actually my second choice for post-secondary, as the first was UBC, since it has the largest and most renowned music school in all of Western Canada...but UVic is considered to be second only to UBC in that regard, so I guess it's not too shabby either!  :D :D :D I think the competition for UBC School of music undergraduate studies is extremely tough, especially in my case since I auditioned with piano. A friend of mine, who also ended up heading to UVic this fall, won the Gold Medal in the Chinese Electone (an electric keyboard instrument) competition  and Silver medal in the internationally recognized Pan-Asian competition, but he was still rejected by UBC's piano division.

Anyways, I hope UVic would turn out to be the best for us, as I heard the city has gorgeous weather compared to Vancouver, and that the campus at the university itself is a very close, intimate environment. :) Just thought I'd share this good news, it really means a lot to me since I am aspiring to become a University professor ( Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting) in the future. Thanks for your time and wish me luck!  ;)

P.S. Wasn't there a GMG member that is also auditioning for UVic this year? I forgot his name.

Congrats, Kelvin! You're in luck, as UVic just became the first university with an exclusively Steinway music school (well, technically, Boston). I have a friend (also 18) who was at the Victoria Conservatory who is going into UBC 3rd year this fall. He must have had quite the audition...

Make sure you get to know Harald Krebs (he teaches theory at UVic). He's so interesting and very knowledgeable.

Oh. My. Goodness.  Congratulations, Kelvin!  That's a wonderful opportunity for you and I'm sure you'll make the most of it.

BTW FWIW I had no idea you were 18.  You come across as an immature 30 year-old, not a precocious teen!  That explains a couple of things and I apologize for having been a bit hard on you on a couple of occasions in the past.

Again, congratulations, dude!   8)

So you're going into conducting, too?

Hmmm...his last post 4 months back said he was living in Hong Kong.  I'd never have guessed UVic had a branch there!
