I've put myself on the "only buy it if you are going to listen to it right away" plan.  This was after my brother-in-law calculated that if I listened to music every waking hour for three months, then I still wouldn't have got through my collection.  So far it's working.

Well, this is the sort of thing that's always an eye-opener. I rip all my disks to flac as soon as I get them and play the files back through WinAMP. WinAMP has a nasty little feature at the bottom of the main window that says (on mine) XXXX files   104 days, 14 hours 32 minutes... :-\

Back on topic, welcome, M.I.. Nice to see you dive into the forum headfirst. You're a brave lad... :D

I'm not sure if I'm brave, but I've been enough forums that my own shyness isn't really a problem anymore. I have really enjoyed the conversations on this forum so far. It's always nice coming to a place and chatting with like-minded individuals.

Oh yeah, especially when there's not many (if any) people you know in real life that shares that interest.

Just think I live in Georgia where the only thing that gets played down here is country music or heavy metal, so yes, it is quite a refreshment to talk with people that are cultured and have an interest in real music.

Oh yeah, living in Florida I know what you mean. Except, even worse- typically replace the heavy metal with rap. Really, really, loud rap...

During the 4 years of high school riding the bus, all that was played on the radio was only country in the morning (the bus driver's choice) and rap in the afternoon (the choice of almost everyone riding the bus).

In the 7 or so years I've been listening to classical, I've met one person that is even familiar with the names "Mahler," "Shostakovich," "Takemitsu," "Wagner," etc. (though not Bruckner, interestingly).

Though I guess it's kinda like that everywhere.  ;)

Yeah, there's nothing like waking up in the morning and getting on a bus where they're blasting hillbilly music. Makes life seem a little bit more complete doesn't it? NOT!!!! :D

I have actually met a few people here in Georgia who enjoyed classical music, but their knowledge is quite limited. I couldn't throw a totally obscure name out like Castillo (obscure Guatemalan composer) and expect a response. No, that just wasn't going to happen.

There's a duo based in Atlanta for whom I've written a piece. I'll make a noise when I know when they'll perform it.

That will be great, Karl. I'm still waiting for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to play some Berg. When they play some Berg, then I'll go and see them. :D

Wow, hadn't thought about it in those terms! Spano seems to have done interesting things with programming, but I guess that bringing Berg in (nor, I am guessing, Schoenberg) has not been in the mix.

Come to think of it, it was really bold programming on Levine's part to have all that Schoenberg sound out in Symphony Hall those two seasons!

Berg's music is something I would really love to see live. I would love to see his "Violin Concerto" or any of his orchestral works. "Lulu Suite" and "Three Pieces for Orchestra" were always favorites of mine as is his song cycles like "Seven Early Songs."

I wouldn't mind seeing some Schoenberg or Webern either for that matter. Hell, I'd like see some Bartok, but he seldom (if ever) gets played here in Atlanta.

All of them, their music is a rich experience live and in the hall.  We've been very lucky in Boston.

Not to torment you, but a particularly memorable concert here was the Berg Concerto for Violin, Piano and Thirteen Winds.

I loathe you....just kidding. Ah, yes, the "Chamber Concerto." You were very lucky to have seen that live. I'll have to check ASO's concert schedule to see if they're performing anything worth my time.

For reasons like that this is why I am so happy that I live in Vienna, Austria, the classical music capital of the world. It's lovely walking through the Inner City and hearing Beethoven, Mozart or Schubert's music coming from a window overhead.  8)

Well not all of us have the luxury of living in Vienna. If I did, you think I would be in Georgia? :D

Look at the bright side: the barbecue in Vienna ain't much ; )

MI - not sure where you are located in Georgia, but wife & I have enjoyed visiting the state, however, as you can imagine, we've picked 'vacationing spots' - Atlanta has some interesting spots (aquarium, Margaret Mitchell house, CNN, et al) and some excellent restaurants - most of our other visits have been to the coast, i.e. Savannah and the Brunswick area (Sea Island, Cloisters, and the other complex of islands there).

Now, a few years ago returning from a car trip to Amelia Island (just north of Jacksonville), we did an overnight in Augusta on the upper Savannah River - now, I'm a golf fan, so I gave Ausuta National (home of the Masters) a call to see if I could get a private tour (yes, a joke call!), but I was amazed at how cordial the person was on the other end of the phone explaining that this was not possible (of course, something I already realized) - but a FUN try - Dave  ;D
