Frederik Pacius (1809-91)

Thought of as the father of Finnish music his early romantic Violin concerto I've just got hold of is a little spare, idley fanciful and Mendelssohnian but has a few of those characteristic staggered flourishes and deep strings Sibelius was to make so much of. It might be closer to the German concertos than Sibelius's, but I'd say has more Finland in it than Crusell of the generation before...

Pacius@!  Of course, we all honour him as the composer of music of the Finnish - and also the Estonian! - naitonal anthem.
