I don't think I know a single chamber work by a Briton (including SQs!) anyway... :P

Guido

That needs to be remedied very quickly Maciek. I can think of two instrument/piano sonatas already which are two of my all time favourite works in any genre. Will be sending them along shortly...
Geologist.

The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away

Go ahead, Guido. ;D

Karl, another quibble: what if the pianist is humming?

I wonder at the strange conditions: 7 works, two performers, no voice, no British composers (with (not too much) respect to Elgar's or Delius' violin sonatas I struggle to think that these would crowd out other candidates and had to be excluded beforehand...)

I imagine the last condition was to avoid the thread being flooded with works written by every composer to come out of the British Isles in the past 500 years, as often happens here on GMG  ;)

I thought that, why?

OK. Get it now. Speaking personally, I am aware I prattle on far too much on British composers.

I wonder, myself, as the thread initiator.  At this remove, I've no idea what the driver was.

You also said no string quartets in case "two performers" wasn't enough! :P

And you excluded voice in your anti-Schubert crusade. >:D

See I would have the made rules to exclude Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and Shostakovich to level the playing fields.

Anyway Janacek's violin sonata might have made my short list, but I can see from the previous posts that no one else agrees!
