Hi David (yeah, love those chords too!), Marc (thanks for the band info!), Conor, Dave, David (lots of Daves & Davids here!) and fellow cat-slave Hollywood (do you have a sister called "Brazilian"?)

In response to David Johnson, Gort's been miserable as sin ever since we landed. He's so grumpy I'm now calling him "Gort the Git". Why? Well, he gets some very odd looks, followed by a refusal, when he asks for sump oil down the local pub. (Come to think of it, he gets some very odd looks anyway!)

Dyson is so underrated and often not talked about. He wrote some fine music. Thank goodness to conductors like Richard Hickox for doing great things with this man's music.

Welcome aboard! You have great tastes in classical music.

Hollywood -
Sorry if you didn't "get" the quip - it was a slightly risque one,  :o pertaining to ladies' hairstyles (of a sort).
Google "Hollywood Brazilian" to find the meaning - and I apologise in advance,  :'( it was a bit flippant but the play on words just popped into my head. As you're not here to slap my wrist I'll slap my own......OUCH! I consider myself suitably chastised!

I like the photo - is that His Most Serene Excellence Gizmo the Great? If so, he looks a fearsome chap - but I'm sure Her Royal Highness Princesss NooNoo of Malvern Wells would be a match for him! (Or maybe not; look at those teeth......)

One of my all-time favourite pieces of English music is "The Poor Parson of a Town" from Dyson's The Canterbury Pilgrims. So noble and uplifting, a cross between Elgarian "nobilmente" and Hubert Parry's greatest tune, Jerusalem. Makes my eyes moist every time I hear it.

And I've only just discovered that the composer's son is the famous physicist Freeman Dyson.

As far as I know, George Dyson is no relation to James Dyson, inventor of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner.  I'm still waiting for some wag who dislikes the composer's music, to post the inevitable quip:
"Dyson sucks!"

Elgarian

And now the most important question, for a man who lives just down the road from Elgar ....

Do you ride a bicycle?

Alas! I am hopeless with anything on two wheels! Never had my version of "Mr. Phoebus", I regret to say. No, strictly Shanks's pony or the car for me.

(I don't think the roads around Malvern are as user-friendly as they were in EE's day. If he were cycling along the Wells Road right now he would no doubt experience a "brown trouser moment".)

That photo isn't him but here is a photo of Gizmo the Great at last year's Xmas party.

Oh, he looks quite sweet for a Supreme Being!

HRH Princess NooNoo deigned to favour her servant last night by dropping a dead mouse at the foot of the bed. I feel highly honoured!

Yes, she's a bit pneumatic, isn't she? I guess Gort's resistance would be futile, but I'm sure he'd enjoy being "assimilated"! (It'd take his mind off the lack of sump oil.)

Klaatu

Thanks for that, Soapy - I'll try to tune in.

In addition to the three Davids who have posted here (David Johnson, MN Dave, and David Ross), we also have a Daverz and a David W. Sometimes we get confused, too.
