Ten thumbs

When I'm on my death bed, I hope to have enough time to listen to some of my favorite music but the piece that announces the end should be spiritual and uplifting. Of the many possible candidates a good choice is Bonis' song 'Elève-toi mon âme'. At that stage in my life, I won't care that it is in French!
A day may be a destiny; for life
Lives in but little—but that little teems
With some one chance, the balance of all time:
A look—a word—and we are wholly changed.

Four Last Songs (R Strauss)

I Thought this was sort of about the last music i'd listen to/music that doesn't interest me the least. :D In that case i'd say something boring like a Winifred Wagner opera, but otherwise i'd say nothing- or something about Lord Jesus.

Ugh

I often try to focus on whatever music I am listening to with the idea that this might be the last music I ever listen to. It greatly enhances the experience.

Therefore my reply to the thread question would be that it is not so much which music, but which way I listen to it  8)

I was in London right after the Subway bombings and again a few weeks later on the day when the unsuccessful bomb attempts shut down the Subway system. I remember travelling back in the following day and looking round the carriage. I had my MP3 on with Janet Baker singing Bach; I briefly thought that by chance I had on the right music if something was about to kick off that day too.

was at a funeral at the Rothko Chapel a few weeks back and a mezzo-soprano from Houston Grand Opera sang Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen from Mahler's Ruckert-Leider

Hard to beat that

"In Paradisum" from Faure's Requiem.

Interesting you should bring this up, because I've actually thought about this. I once said a long time ago  the last music I want to hear on earth is Rudolf Buchbinder playing Haydn's piano sonatas.

Mozart's Requiem

Bill,  You don't like Brahms' German Requiem?  I like Brahms' Requiem a bit better than I do Mozart's.

I stuggled with this. I think I'd like to hear opus 132 (Beethoven) if I was going through any sort of lengthy dying act.

But, Wagner during the last throes of death. The last two acts of Gotterdammerung (Solti), if possible (laughing).

To die hearing the defiant projection of Birgitt Nielsen...now that would be something!

This was the first thing that came to mind.  If it's good enough for Barbirolli (w/ Janet Baker), then it's good enough for me.

And this was the second.

The other strong candidates are Sibelius's 5th and Der Abschied from DLVDE.
