I'm a rock music fan so can anyone insert two rock or pop artists here? I'll appreciate it :)

For example, Beethoven is to Mahler what Pink Floyd is to Genesis (it's a bad example but you get the point)

Beatles > Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd = what Beatles wanted to be in the 60s, but couldn't.

Right, those Beatles were just slackers. ::)

Sheer cluelessness...not surprising.  Maybe you have to have been there, but in some cases even that probably wouldn't help.

Not slackers, they just declined really quick. Then Yoko came, and it was all over, even before Lennon got shot. Then Paul McCartney sucked ass for the remaining of his career.

And for that we may thank whatever gods we thank in these situations.

Beethoven is to Mahler what The Spanic Boys are to REM.

Doesn't all rock = decadence of the West?

Yes but its not like i can pretend i didn't grew up listening to this stuff.

In the world of Jazz, the closest thing to Beethoven is Coltrane. He even goes through three different musical periods, a classical bebop period during the Blue Train era, an "heroic" period starting with Giant Steps, and a "late" period with his free Jazz albums.

As for Mahler, i can't think of anyone. Eric Dolphy perhaps, if he had lived longer.

...Imagine if malpracticing quacks were allowed to take the place of students of Michael de Bakey: the progresses of medecine would go down the drain and get forgotten more swiftly than the science and medicine of antiquity were lost during the Middle Age. That's decadence...
That seems a little unfair to those who trained classically yet chose another musical style, such as Duke Ellington, and to those who do/did both, such as Leonard Bernstein and pianist Gabriela Montero.  Perhaps a better comparison would be between conventional doctors and chiropractors, or conventional nurses and traditional midwives.

Duke Ellington is popular music only from a vestigial point of view. Jazz is a real Art form, its not popular music the way Rock is.

Beethoven is to Mahler...what the Yardbirds are to Led Zeppelin.

...what strawberries are to strawberries dipped in dark chocolate.

...what Harp Lager is to Guinness Stout.

...what a Jeep Cherokee is to a Ford Excursion.

...what Wolfgang Puck is to Gordon Ramsey.

...what Dubliners is to Ulysses.

That's true now, but no jazz musician forgets where this music started: in New Orleans brothels. :o :)

Beethoven is to Mahler

What Ford is to Chevrolet
What Dodge is to Chrysler
What Corn Flakes are to Post Toasties
What the clear blue sky is to the deep blue sea
What Hank Williams is to Neil Armstrong
