Hi Erato

cheers for the steer.

David

Is that Otto Klemperer as your avatar?

Anyway, I can't say that I'm a big fan of Beethoven. Never have been really, but obviously plenty of people are! :D You mentioned Bartok and he's in my top 5 favorite composers. I have enjoyed his music for 10 years. I was listening to Bartok before I even got into classical music!

Welcome aboard. I look forward to your contributions.

Hi Mirror Image,

yes, that is indeed Klemperer :)

thanks for the welcome.

I notice from your sig that you are currently listening to Dutilleux amoung others.

I only recently discovered him. I caught some beautiful modern piano music on Radio 3 late at night (when they play the good stuff) and it was the Preludes played by Robert Levin from his new ECM disc of Dutilleux. Have you heard this disc? Its great  8)

cheers

I have not heard that disc, David. I may be considered an outsider here, but I seldom listen to any classical music that is not played by an orchestra (this also includes a chamber orchestra). I do enjoy a few chamber works, but my main interest is in orchestral music: symphonies, ballets, concerti, tone poems, film music, etc. I also enjoy choral works with orchestra as well as song cycles. I like the broader pallette of color and texture that orchestral music offers.

Anyway, Dutilleux has become a favorite of mine. Have you heard any of his orchestral works? There's a 4-CD set on Chandos with Yan Pascal Tortelier and the BBC Philharmonic that is outstanding and also acts as a great introduction to Dutilleux's music. You should definitely check this set out.

Happy listening! :D
