Sir Robert Birley (1903 - 1982) was an educationalist and Headmaster of Eton College. Despite being a pillar of the establishment he acquired the nickname 'Red Robert'. According to Wikipedia this was because his mildly liberal politics caused disquiet; I read a different account several years ago in a review of biography.

Shortly after the end of WW2 Birley was sent to Germany to help reconstruction in the British Zone. He had a visitor from London who was alarmed to see a portrait of Karl Marx on his office wall; he said nothing but word soon got round back in London that Birley had turned communist, hence the nickname. In fact, Birley was temporarily using a colleague's office and the portrait was of Johannes Brahms. Nevertheless, the silly nickname stuck (probably as a joke).

Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

To me, they kind of look alike.

If I saw that picture, I would immediately think "Verdi" - but no, it's a somewhat less celebrated 19th-century opera composer, Ambroise Thomas.

Would I be very odd if I said Ruth Gipps and Richard Arnell look alike?

Some time ago I had done this on Tubin's thread:

Eduard Tubin and York Bowen.
