I heard Turina's Piano Trio (op.67) today in a concert-first piece i've heard from him-- and i really didn't like it at all; no coherence! And he seemed to miss a distintive musical personality; reminiscences of Franck and Debussy--even of Grieg...! Any recommendations? What should i listen from him?

val

Listen to "Canto a Sevilla", a masterpiece for soprano and orchestra. It is perhaps Turina's best work. There are two splendid versions, old but remarkable: Victoria de Los Angeles/Fistoulari and Lola de Aragon/Freitas Branco.

I also suggest that you listen his piano music, by Alicia de Larrocha: two beautiful works, Danzas Fantasticas and Sanlucar de Barrameda.
The Sonata for guitar is another beautiful masterpiece.

The new erato

Anybody know his string quartet - Oracion de Torero or something like that? With my interest in this medium I've always wondered whether I have actually missed something there.

val

"Oration del Torero" is a work for string orchestra. It is a very beautiful piece. It seems that Turina wrote it, at first, for luth, but I never heard that version.

The version for string orchestra has some great interpretations:  Freitas Branco, Stokowski and Argenta, among others.

Todd

I've heard only some of his piano music, and then Turina seemed less distinctive than Albeniz, Granados, or Falla.  Still, it's not too bad at all.  Esteban Sanchez's recording brings out enough to listen to on occasion.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Daverz

There's a beautifully done Telarc disc of the Danzas Fantasticas, Sinfonia Sevillana, and La Procesion del Rocio.

I guess I like the Piano Trio more than you do, and it is recognizably Turina.

Glad to find the Turina thread. As for the recordings of his orchestral works, I have Almeida/RCA, Batiz/IMG(EMI), Lobos-Cobos/Telarc, Darman/Naxos, 2 of Mena/Chandos, and Udaeta/Claves. They all are wonderful, and there is no bad recording. I like the first three recordings especially. The Darman/Naxos is excellent too, but the recording sound is just fair. I like Turina piano works as well, and mainly listen the Naxos recordings by Maso.

When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

Thank you very much for the pictures of LP and helpful info about Turina. I have never seen the records, and the cover arts look beautiful. As I admire Turina's compositions and movies by Luis Bunuel, I am thinking about visiting Seville after the pandemic.

I like his music very much -  I have the vast majority of it now - some things are not available - maybe one day that will be corrected.
I'd rather ensembles tackle missing compositions than the 4,000th version of Brahms' symphonies.

The Claves discs have generally been of high quality.  An easy way to get a wide variety of the chamber pieces.
