Some of my college students were as disruptive as middle schoolers. While I was trying (with great enthusiasm) to make a point, all too often they disrupted class by talking to one another (using words like "effing A"), by tumultuously passing gas, by cracking their knuckles, by humming and singing off key, and by leaving the room at will. I once had a male student pull the hair of pretty females and sniff around their crotches; and guess what, those young ladies enjoyed the attention! Retirement has been a blessing.

So, your sniffing days are over?

Judging by avatars, you are the one more likely to be sniffing around, Bulldog!   ;D

When I first saw the thread title (and before I read your post), I was thinking . . . "gee, I used to be an obnoxious college student. . . ".  But there was no sniffing, hair-pulling, or farting involved.  Maybe a little swearing in a good cause.  My brand of obnoxiousness ran more along the lines of arguing a point opposite from a professor's most dearly held opinion, or challenging the conventional wisdom on the topic of theday with some theor of my own.  Obnoxious, yes, but in a different way. ::)

Seems like we could do a lot more of this here in America:

You're joking, right? Corporal punishment went out years ago, and with good reason. I read the information above that video, and even in Iran where the beating of students happened, the teachers doing that were immediately dismissed...
