Why aren't there any nice discmans on the market anymore?

Or can someone recommend one to me?

Philoctetes

I have a walkman. I tend to simply get the cheapest on the market.

Because everyone that used to use a discman now uses and iPod.

I have a discman, but I must admit it was considered obsolete at least three years ago.

I don't. :-[

I'm having loads of fun in bus and train with all those agitated and nervous people with their iPods and mobile phones! :P

I have a Aiwa discman XP-ZV701: Mp3, CD-R/RW-playback. As long as it works for me, I leave my (mini-)computers in da house. :)

There are still discmans available. If you really want one, I wouldn't recommand the cheapest on the market though. Had bad experiences with them in the past: they did not last very long.

Take a mid-priced Sony, that would be my advice. Maybe the Sony D-NF340 will do?

No need to stop using one if it still works, but I doubt much effort is going into discman development these days.  I had a Sony discman in the early days, probably 1988 or so, and it was a very nicely made device and sounded pretty good.  When it died I had trouble finding anything nearly as decent to replace it.  It was no longer an elite product.  Maybe it is still possible to find a well made one, but I have never been able to.

Well, a similar experience - I have a Sony discman that must be 10+ yrs old but still works fine - it's bulky and carrying the discs takes up additional space; just not convenient for a trip w/ limited baggage space - I only take it along if a large package of 'new' CDs have arrived that I might want to listen to on a trip. Otherwise, I now travel w/ a laptop (w/ MP3 files) and an iPod (w/ a LOT of MP3 files) - the latter are now my music on the road.  When the discman 'dies' I will unlikely replace the device.   :D

I have this one, a Sony D-NE319 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Blue) and despite the fact that it is probably obsolete by now (I got it 5 years ago) it still works fine, and I have a whole lot of MP3 disks that also are just fine, so why not play it til it drops? I use my Sandisk e280 for long time frames due to battery life, but I'll get my $$$ worth out of this one. I notice that although I paid $55 5 years ago, a new one now sells for $220! :o :o

It actually still sounds better than the iPod if you don't mind carrying a batch of CD's around with you ...

I thought you vowed never to own an iPod.  Which model are you comparing?

Stuart - well if one rips the tracks at 256 or 320 kbps, I'm not sure w/ earphones that you could really tell a difference, and if even slight, what DIFFERENCE does it make in the situation of the listening, e.g. in an exercise room, reading a book, or hooked to some crappy speakers in a hotel room - bottom line is that 'on the road', the MP3 rips at a decent bps rate work fine for me - Dave  :)

That is not true.  I have the only major brand pdcp still available, which is a Sony... and guess what?  It has an audible noise floor.  My ipod touch, sansa clip and cowon d2 do not have an audible noise floor.  And guess what?  I can play lossless on them as well so don't even start.

There are.  I use a Sony D-NF430, and it drives Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic headphones more than adequately and sounds quite good.  It's obsolete technology, sure, but so what?  I have thousands of CDs and no time to rip them all, so I need a portable CD player.  There are even cheaper brands (Coby, RCA, Insignia, GPX, and others), but I don't know how they perform.  My guess is that they are similar to Sony units.

Maybe someone can explain what the plastic disc adds to the sound. Is it rounder?

Because they do something only a few people care about. Such products disappear or become expensive. Why should Sony or Panasonic make them? Not make them actually, but why would they relabel a Coby unit or some equivalent and associate their brand with a bottomdweller? It's like tube TVs....sure, Sony and Toshiba and JVC could all put their badge on a Thai or Chinese CRT TV and keep a presence in this tiny shrinking market. But why? To make a tubester like me happy? They don't know I exist and don't want to know. If I ran Sony would I want my business? Shit no!

That's what I would do if I hadn't ripped all of my high and middle priority discs. But since the priority was high I ripped them. The discs I have left unripped are bottom of the pile. So I don't need a disc player to not play them. I can not play them with anything or....nothing.

I'm pretty sure that Gurn has his whole collection on flac/mp3 and he's just using it because he feels obligated to since he paid good money for it. >:D  On the other, I still have to rip alot of cds including big box sets of Haydn, Beethoven and Bach. :'(
