Anouk Aimée, one of the great beauties of European cinema in the second half of the 20th century, died today in Paris, aged 92.

She was best known for her appearance in Claude Lelouch's A Man and a Woman (for which she was nominated for an Oscar as best actress), but also starred in e.g. Fellini's La dolce vita and 8 1/2, and Jacques Demy's Lola (a movie I have yet to watch).

She was a great actress, and an enigmatic beauty. By chance, I had lunch at the table next to hers in New York's Le Veau d'Or in the early 80s, and she was extraordinarily magnetic, in a cool and detached way. Stunning!

Here she is in La dolce vita:

[Matisse] was interested neither in fending off opposition,
nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.
His only competition was with himself. — Françoise Gilot

Dry Brett Kavanaugh

André

A French Ava Gardner or Sophia Loren, less sultry than either but with a more classic, Nefertiti-like port de tête and an enigmatic, noli me tangere look .

Only the best French actresses could convey that kind of feeling: Danielle Darrieux in Madame de...(Max Ophüls), Jeanne Moreau in Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Louis Malle). Untouchable, inimitable, unforgettable.

Plus, Dominique Sanda. Still, my favorite actress is Catherine Deneuve!
