Those of you who know Grieg's Lyric Pieces will be familiar with his Grossmutters Minuett, Op. 68 No. 2. I presume there is some connection here with his friend and compatriot Backer-Grøndahl's Small Fantasy Piece, Op. 55 No. 7, similarly entitled Bedstemors Minuet. I'm not sure which came first but Backer-Grøndahl takes this title literally and records the piece as composed by Agatha Aasilla Backer around 1820. Has anyone come across any other instances of music by forebears being edited and included in a composer's own works?
A day may be a destiny; for life
Lives in but little—but that little teems
With some one chance, the balance of all time:
A look—a word—and we are wholly changed.
