You can stream or download it, though.  I see it on Qobuz:

Dear Der lächelnde Schatte
certainly a respectable opinion, I can't agree particularly for melodiya recordings.

I wish that Shchedrin's Symphony No. 1 (w/ Svetlanov on Melodiya) would get some kind of reissue from like one of those labels like Alto. Since our @vandermolen writes liner notes for this label, perhaps he could make it happen by putting a bug in their ear? This would be awesome.

In fact, the Olympia version is also on Qobuz, so you can go back and forth.  The Melodiya is louder, but otherwise I didn't hear a reason to prefer one over the other.

A nice thought John but I suspect that there would be all kinds of copyright issues. However, I'll check with the Big Boss at Alto  ;D

Thanks, Jeffrey. There is currently a copy on Discogs for $52 (incl. shipping). :o

Re: Jeffrey @vandermolen

I just broke my no CD buying rule to buy that Shchedrin Svetlanov recording on Melodiya. I bought it from the seller on Discogs I mentioned previously, but, to my surprise, he had two options available for shipping, so I went with the cheaper option. This CD wasn't cheap (it cost me $45), but the way I look at it is it was in a desirable condition (like new) and this is a rare CD that I'm likely to never run across for this price again. Also, I've been looking for this recording for a long-time. I'm glad I took the plunge, because that 1st symphony is something else. Also, I own all the rest of the recordings in this particular Shchedrin series, so I definitely was happy to finally cap off this collection (and my CD collection in general) with this disc.

It's a great disc John!
You won't regret it  :)

The Symphony is also in Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music 2, Vol. 55

Yeah, I probably could've found the digital download easily, but I already own several of these Shchedrin Melodiya series discs, but this is the one that I've been trying to find for many years and I just couldn't let it slip away.

OH, I would expect very few people to want that much Svetlanov.

I don't mind Svetlanov's conducting. I think like any of the better conductors, he has turned in fabulous performances as well as performances I would never like to hear again.

That's interesting to know John. I asked Alto about it but have received no reply yet. They are probably fed up with my 'helpful suggestions' for future releases  ;D

Well, thanks for asking even though I'm sure they think you're a nag. ;D
