April, what do you think? A good month to exercise fiscal discipline?

Here, on the eve of the April Fool, I'll say I'm in, starting tomorrow.

Maybe I'll make it two months . . . keep 'dry' for May, too. Who knows?

The new erato

I will defy your evil force, ohahahaaaaa, I will defy you I say!

So far, so good.  Only two purchases since Jan 1 (one a boxset, Haitink's RVW--but at a good price!).  I don't have time to listen to more than a fraction of what I already own anyway.  BTW, the Haitink is quite good.  This morning after yoga Anne put on the Sarah Chang Lark Ascending.  More full bodied and lush than Ms Hahn's spiritually seeking recording, but quite nice as well.

Glad you're enjoying Haitink's VW, David. You are now a member of the elite few (Karl, me ;D )

Thread duty: I've had a revelation about addiction; a revelation about an addict's self-awareness...or lack of. I've been so proud of myself. I resolved at the beginning of the year to drastically cut back purchases and, in my mind, I've been true to that resolve. It really seemed as though I'd only bought a handful. When I went to my picture gallery to confirm it (I scan and upload each CD cover) I was shocked to count 84 CDs since Jan 1 ...eighty-fracking-four!  :(

Okay, I finally admit it...I need help.

It's surprisingly (or even distressingly) easy!  Which is why I thought, it isn't enough to say that when I buy, I'll keep myself to best practices . . . that I should designate a whole month of abstinence, as it were.  It isn't absolute abstinence from here on, but it's still value added (and only partly by curbing outflows).

Wow, TextBook,... yes, that really is exactly the revelation any junkie or drunk has in their 'moment of clarity'. It's the same principle of More-Fantasy-Now,... haha, with an emphasis on the NOW!! Keep in mind that that part of the AA criteria (for whether you have a problem or not), is if your (fill in the blank behavior) is making your life 'unmanageable'. If, like some other Unmentionables around here ::) ;D, you lie to wife, or wotnot, over your Passion, thennnn 'you might be a redneck', as they say! But, if you're only shocked because of quantity, hey, you might just have a hearty appetite.

Of course, we know better! ;) ;D

My salvation: Stop buying things on the internet. Just get your cd's at the local record store. On internet you can get more cd's for the same money, but why always want more? Don´t support the commercial industry, it´s not healthy at all, support your local store.

At the record store you can get a cd immediately. When the record store doesn´t have a cd you want, you can always order it. Maybe you can make a deal with the record store about the price.

That´s how I am dealing with this at the moment.

Alas, there is no such thing any more in most places, especially for classical.

How poor, how deprived!

You can still make a trip to the nearest store. Why not do that, instead of ordering behind your pc?

Like I said, there is no such thing. Unless your definition of "nearest" includes an 8+ hour plane ride. Here in Chicago there are practically no stores left that carry a meaningful selection of classical CDs beyond "3 Tenors Greatest Hits" and "Classics for Relaxation". I'm not even exaggerating. Crow's Nest went out of business eons ago, the CSO closed its physical Symphony Store (which in any case stocked almost exclusively CSO recordings) due to failure to extend their lease at favorable rates, Borders (what's left of them) and B&N cut their classical selections drastically down to the aforementioned mass market cheese. I have no choice but to order online, apart from hoping that my local used CD store might occasionally stumble upon some gems. If I lived in Berlin it would be another matter. I'd revise my commute such as to strategically pass by Dussmann or Zweitausendeins every other day.  ;D But in most places these days shopping in physical stores is simply not a viable option for the serious classical collector.

Thanks, Karl. I meant "salvation" of course.

Henk

Well, at first that seems like the typo you made, Henk; but salvation doesn't work there.

So, no, I still don't understand the remark at all.

Surely he meant solution.

Well, stop buying recordings on internet or at least limit it. Every time you do, local stores all around the world get into trouble deeper.

Which part of what I wrote are you having trouble understanding?! There are no local stores anywhere near me left to kill. Indeed, my orders from amazon marketplace often come from "local stores" somewhere far away, which only manage to continue selling classical CDs because of the internet and things like amazon marketplace. It's the 21st century. Get with it already!

Don't understand you. I consider consuming at a local record store a nice thing to do, it's good to support that business. So "salvation" is the right word to choose here imo.

Ah, yes, your salvation.  I was forgetting your messianic streak, Henk ; )

The stores you talk about must be stores which have to sell their recordings in order to pay their debts. It seems unlikely to me that they choose to operate in this way. They will always loose the competition with large companies like Amazon.

Besides I don't talk about the market for second handed recordings.
