It's quite beautiful, yet it's played too slowly. It was mentioned here recently that an arietta ought to be performed at a tempo that allows it to be sung.

For me, it is Backhaus reaching the end. His hands filled with a lifetime of experience rescued their pinnacle, as he had to find the dexterity from the inner reaches:

Yes, his interpretation of the Arietta carries a profoundly moving sense of eternity.
