Do you use any Social Networking Sites?
« on: January 14, 2011, 02:49:40 PM »
I have implemented a social network sharing option on posts.

I am interested in how much this will be used. Do you participate in any of these sites? Would you use the "Share this" option to promote a post using the social networking site of your choice?

I am on Facebook and Twitter, and might consider sharing a GMG post to either.  Although, that said, it might be tricky, given that some of the posts here might be odd out of context--i.e., without the "conversation" either before or after.  And for Twitter, obviously the posts would have to be somehow condensed to fit in with the 140-character format.

But an idea well worth exploring, for sure.

I have a couple of Facebook friends I am itching to get hooked on GMG. My roommate last year read GMG daily, but never registered. A pity, he would be fun to have around.

Um, no. This is as close as I get to being social, and that's a struggle sometimes. :)

I think this is interesting, though the topic has to be appropriate to share on Facebook. I just shared the Bad Hair days thread, because it's funny.

It's a way of promoting GMG, a nice way, without boring people with it. However I don't think one should expect a lot new members, but it's good I think to let the outside world know we exist. Baat het niet, dan schaadt het niet, we say in Dutch (which means if it won't benefit, neither it will cause damage).

Maybe.  Though a good friend has let me know recently that she considers everything I post that's not an update on my social life (social life?  what's that?) is like spam.  And i'm so socially backward that I feel just the opposite, that if it's about me it's bo-ring!

ah--you just sneaked this in!  how appropo!  maybe not with GMG, but with some of our contributors, perhaps...?

:)

Difference maybe between women and men? Though I think this difference is made too big by making it a opposition, seeking opposites between women and men in everything. But maybe that's just what we want. ::)

However that's supposedly why I added the text: "funny topic on a forum I frequently visit". So I added information about my social life (proposed that communicating with people on a forum can be considered as social, which I think it can).

So you really have a virtual life separated from a normal life? Do you want that? Isn't it strange or old-fashioned to have contact with people on a forum you don't know in normal life and don't have contact on internet with people you really know, having options like Facebook?

Henk

Henk, no actually.  I don't think it is strange.  I can get in touch with the people in my 'normal' life by picking up the phone or knocking on their door, or just send them a quick email.

I do need GMG for my classical music passion, as I really don't have any close friends or family who share this same passion.  Same thing for chess, I have to find people to play on-line, as I really don't have friends or family who share these interests.

One of my goals in 2011 is to try and develop more contacts and newer friends who are interested in classical music that live in my city, and aren't necessarily 105 years old.  :D

Ok, but I think it's old-fashioned (I already added the word in my post) ;).

Let me say it differently. Isn´t  it an attractive idea for you to stop having a virtual life from a normal life, so to mix this up? What are the advantages to keep it separate?

Well, I guess what I was trying to say was I wish for my life to be less reliant or dependent on technology.  I'm not ready to eliminate it completely from my life, but I just want to lead a simpler life where I'm not on all these social network sites or texting on a cell phone, etc.  For me, I don't need all that to lead a fulfilling life.

Gurn - LOL!  ;D  At the moment this is pretty much my feelings - I frequent just 3 forums (although I belong to several others) and the input occupies about as much time as I want to spend on this effort - I've been encouraged by spouse et al to join Facebook but have absolutely refused! Just a stubborn 'old bastard', I guess - I can't imagine my potential contacts on a 'social network' wanting to see my posts on this forum or the other two that I visit daily, i.e. woodworking & computers!  I'm HAPPY where I am at for the time being -  :D

Yes, very much agree with that, Ray. I am simply horrified by the thought of being that wired in! My company provides me a cell phone and I have to carry it. But when I get a text message on it, I simply delete it without reading, and I have never sent one. IT'S A PHONE!  ::)   :)

Even my mother (83 years young) tried to get me on Facebook. I deleted the invite without even going to look it over. :P
