Rob, I'm not sure if there is that much interest of using those Tweet and facebook links at the top of each posting? (I'm on facebook but wouldn't use them myelf.) In any case, all those many links do cause a considerable slowdown of the downloading time of each page at my end... :-\

Well, since the feature has only just arrived, one shouldn't require that their use immediately go viral in order to demonstrate interest ; )

I'm not representative, I'm sure, but I do like them.  I've used the facebook button; and will try the tweet option sometime today (just waiting for a tweetable post, nyuk nyuk).

None. I can see little useful use of them, and am worried about their handling of private information aboout the users.

I have a slight presence on the professional LinkedIn forum, though that's stricktly professionally oriented.

I think there is a glitch in that count system. If you check the "users on line" function, you'll often find ten or more guests who all logged it at the identical time and who are all looking at some obscure thread from years ago. Too much of a coincidence for me.

I think Tony's right that many of the guests are bots; but some of the guests may be folks from Twitter of Facebook who have mashed a link I've posted, out of curiosity.

Some of them may become members. Hey, you never know.

I think the problem people are having is most related to connection speed. When I'm in my house on wireless or at work with high-speed cable, there is no noticeable difference. But when I'm out in my man-cave-garage where I need to use dial-up, the slowness of page loading is very evident. Since the last images to appear before the page is finally complete are the social network icons, they are most likely the cause of the sluggishness. While I think change that brings in new members is good, it's not worth it if we lose long-time members in the process.

Your hunch is correct.  I routinely run some of these IP addresses through a spam checker site (or several), and 95% of them are known spammers.  You may have noticed, too, that we have a daily influx of "new members" ( ::)) who have somehow managed to join, despite Rob's anti-spam registration procedures.

Others have mentioned this, too.  I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the Facebook and Twitter functions, but (just thinking out loud) not having them on each post.  They could be located on the formatting menu, and you'd have to say, enter the post number.  That way, the icons would only show up once on each page.

But that would explain why we have so many guests who ignore and do not respond to the brilliance of our witty repartee here!   $:)

'fraid so. It seems that the code slowed some (but not all) members' brwosers to a crawl, interfered with the page look, and didn't seem to be used much.
 
I would still like to implement a system where clicking a unobtrusive "Share" icon opens up an option to email/tweet/facebook/stumble a selected post or thread.
