What the wind quintets is the meaning of this thread?

snyprrr

this is just a friendly little thread for lovers of string duos and such.

i went on for quite a while (and very poetically i might add)but my post got eaten by the double click, and now i'm tired and don't want to re-write, but...

i just want to extol the virtues of this little combination and promote my appointment of the RAVEL-HONEGGER-MARTINU-KODALY axis as its classic represenatives.

there may not be too many hidden masterpieces here, but i welcome any thoughts.

ROGER SESSIONS last piece was a duo movement from 1978.

My favourite string duo is Beethoven's "With two eyeglasses obbligato" for viola and cello, WoO 32.

Mozart also has two lovely duos for violin & viola.

Sorin,

I was just listening to "With two eyeglasses obbligato" for viola and cello, WoO 32 yesterday.  I love that piece!  :)  It's on the same disc I have of the DG Amadeus Quartet w/ Cecil Aronowitz recording of Beethoven's String Quintet, op. 29

I also really enjoy the Six Minuets Wo0 9 and Six Landlers Wo0 15 for 2 violins and bass, and the Prelude and Fugue for 2 violins and Cello in E minor, Hess 29.

Although these are more "obscure" Beethoven works, I love their feel.  I affectionately refer to these as Beethoven's "Jam Sessions"  ;D

Beethoven's Op. 29 Quintet is a brilliant work from his early period, a wonderful piece.

Honestly, I eat up anything Ludwig put on paper!  Just because it has a Hess or WoO number doesn't mean it should be neglected.  He left a lot of great little treasures like that out there for us to find!  :)

Have you made a thread on solo violin yet? I'd love to find some more things like Sciarrino's capriccios.

As in the other thread, my knowledge is limited to the classical era, but I'll chime in anyway. Violin and cello:

Albrechtsberger - Hungaroton (solid)
Tomasini - Tactus (not a good one)
Rolla - CPO (very good)
Romberg - Hungaroton (less than stellar)

How about 2 cellos? Boccherini wrote some mean cello sonatas like that.

Viola and cello? Franz Danzi on Hungaroton.

Autoharp and bass kazoo? I'll look into it.

Listening to this one now --

Arensky Trio in D Minor (Violin, Cello, Piano)
Vivaldi Concerto for Violin and Cello (in B-flat)
Martinu Duo for Violin and Cello
