It's silly poll Friday time!  8)

I voted for 1 N William just to be contrarian, but secretly I adore 2 N Robert's music.

Someone has to give Bobby a vote, so let me do it.

I voted for Robert, just to be contrarian.

Silly is not strong enough a term. Robert Schumann revered Franz Schubert, there is not a single reason, musically or personally, why they should be opposed.

Brahms vs Wagner might make sense (even though one can like both)
Or Landowsky vs Boulez
Berlioz vs Cherubini

What can you possibly be talking about?

This is not a Schumann vs Schubert poll.  Anyways, it was meant to be extremely silly.  That is the whole point of silly poll Fridays.  I just have always found it interesting that a famous American composer "almost" has the same last name as a famous German composer.

What's also interesting is that they both had century anniversaries last year (Robert: b. 1810; William: b. 1910).

I voted for William, just cuz I think he deserves more attention than he currently gets.

By the way, there's also this composer, whose music I've never heard:

I'd certainly vote for Bill as one of the better administrators.  ;D

Georg Schumann, on the other hand, would have trouble being named one of the best Georgs in music...

Bill or Bob? I'll vote for Billy Bob I think.

Indeed - it's hard to imagine him going nuts and throwing himself into the river. Also, I doubt he would carry out his administrative duties under the guise of multiple personalities, something that could cause confusion.

Willum!  Underappreciated and I really like some of his stuff, like the violin concerto and 3rd Symphony.

For sheer achievement, I voted for William.  But one wonders if Clara, absent the then-current prejudice against women composers, might have matched her husband in quantity as she did in quality...? :)

Why can't we vote for Robert Schuman (founding father of the European Dream) ?  8)
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Yes; I visited his home (now a foundation) outside Scy-Chazelles, on my way from Mosel/Luxembourg via Verdun to Champagne as part om  y vacation last year.
