Stumbled over this the other day, after showing some interest in Japanese bowing culture and customer service in general...

No doubt about it, I hate how they treat the man, but the cultural differences are interesting.

When I see german customer service, it works like this (the bigger companies get, the more): If you are a manager, build a massive and heavy shield of cheap workers (soldiers) between you and the customer, and, most importantly, cut all connections between you and the workers.

"Cultural differences"? A striking contrast between civilization and primitiveness is much more like it.  ;D

Speaking of bowing, I've noticed these days that whenever the Japanese PM or some other official makes a public speech he starts and ends by bowing to the national flag. Very impressive.

Not exclusively German, though.  :)

Also by tradition, the head of the company running the nuke plant should kill himself.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Sometimes the Japanese bow and say "Aye!"
A superb nation.  I love how they do that.
"Aye."

It is. On Youtube, you will see millions of videos about bowing, a lot of scenes filmed by westerners, because the bowing business is soooo different from what we are used to. E.g. bowing children after letting them cross the road :)

This guy explains things very well for us non japanese - very well done and interesting:

Lol, you're probably right, my Scotttish ears hear "aye" which always endears me to Japanese people.

The pronunciation is closer to "aye" in those regions of Japan that border Scotland...

Yeah. Consider the difference between what happened in Haiti after the earthquake and what's happening now in Japan. Where's the looting? How comes there isn't any gang raping going on?

Because it's Japan ;) Cannot say anything about Haiti except I never had and will never have real interest for it.
Japan: Country and people have some very impressive aspects. Looting in Japan - Impossible? Japan and crime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSH4KWg-dXY - Basic point in the video: "The way of thinking", I think this really is the point.
