I'm envious. Maybe one day I'll retire to the country, but right now, it's not happening.

As far as Prince goes, I don't think they know about the 'quake. The Housequake, that is.  ;D

Right now I am shutting the blinds because someone in the building across the pond from me is staring in my direction. It's more than a little creepy.
They're a... shall we say... "ill-bred" family whom I can sometimes hear arguing when I leave open the windows (which isn't often, this being Florida and the summertime). Strangely enough, I never hear any of my other neighbors, including the ones that live in the same building.

Needless to say, I do not like my neighbors.
we haven't exactly talked that much with our neighbors yet, maybe a couple times though. The ones to the left only visit the house once every few months.
At the old house, we had this Arab Muslim family who would stay up at night during Ramaddan (i forgot how you spell it) and they were loud, so that was different. I used to have cool neighbors a long time ago but they all moved away.

I had a Serb move in downstairs from us.  A religious fanatic.  There were lots of christian figurines on his windows, and there was a sign "Jesus welcomes you ...."  or something like that on the wall leading to his apt. door.  At first he'd call the cops on us when he heard somebody walking from one room to another, not to mention playing the piano.

Then one day he himself blasted his native music.  The super's son-in-law living next door who's Albanian knocked on the door to turn down that shit.  Then guy's son beat up the super's son-in-law with a crowbar in the garage.  The super's son-in-law then went upstairs, got a gun went back to the garage and killed him.  The super and his family subsequently moved out.  It's interesting to note that super's wife went to Albania to find her daughter a husband--yeah good job.

Then the neighbor guy started tapping the landlady, even though she was married and was.....Jewish.  They were often seen holding hands.  She spent most of her time in his apartment listening for noises.  It was obvious he's a schitzo.  

Then they forced us to put carpeting on the floor--that didn't help.  We couldn't vacuum the floor without a cop showing up at our door 10 minutes later.  Then they dragged us to court on the charges of noise.  We reached a settlement: we'll move out in 4 months, and live without paying rent.  We agreed.

The neighbor downstairs eventually became a super.  He didn't do anything, but instead hired a puerto rican guy who lived in the garage in a tiny little area suitable for a dog.

Then the serb had a dream that "one rich lady will give him money so he could build his own church".  That dream eventually came true when the landlady gave him a few millions.  His church van is often seen parked by the building.

In those big buildings the whole atmosphere is more like a hotel really. You rarely meet anyone unless they live on your floor and visit the laundry room the same time as you.
I do know a few though. The Japanese couple next door who regularly complain to the front desk about the music level coming from our apartment; the strange blonde lady with bottle-thick glasses who lets her cat wander in the hallway to everyone's dismay; the semi-hippie Czech couple.

In our 7 years of living in this building, we had our door knocked once by a neighbor, asking for a wine opener.

We used to have two friends who moved to our building, and we had keys to each other's apartments Seinfeld style  ;D but they are both gone.

My downstairs neighbors (the only people with whom I share a common wall or ceiling/floor) are moving out this w/e.  :'(  They were nice. An MBA student and his wife, who teaches Chinese and English. They were the first neighbors I've ever had who explicitly asked me not to use the soft pedal when I practice piano and who would remind me when I haven't practiced for a while. Who knows who will be next.

Argh, I just don't understand why people can be "disturbed" by the piano sound...it's one of the most musical instruments...I mean, if it was a 2000 pipe organ you're playing in your flat then I would understand, but a piano? Come on, you're providing free entertainment to the entire neighborhood around you.   ;)

It is not creative.  It's unbelievable but it's true.  And it happened in Brooklyn NY--not the ghetto part.  Surprisingly there was no media coverage, this only was mentioned in the local newspaper.

Yeah, horrible neighbours can be, well...awful.

We have good neighbours. We have been in the house for 10 years and the neighbours on one side have been there for 40 years! There is actually a vacant section between them and us so they're a fair way away. They do quite a bit of entertaining, but because of the distance while we can still hear them sometimes, its not loud enough to disturb us. We always wave out to each other and they give us their house key when they go on holiday.

The neighbours on the other side arn't so great :(  We've had several run-in's with them over noise. But they have improved in recent years. They are on a one year sailing holiday at the moment and they have friends staying there who were noisey at first but things have quietened down again.

We live in a cul-de-sac so its very quiet most of the time and we have no neighbours at the back of us.

I have lived in the same apartment for many years.  I don't want to buy a house because I don't want to take care of it.  Of course, apartments can have a lot of trouble with noisy neighbors, but I have been lucky here.

Recently, some undesirables moved into the apartment below me, and they decided that they needed to play booming-bass "music" really loud and for hours on end.  I complained to the management, and apparently others did too.  That shut them up for a while, but one night they came home and turned on their so-called music at top volume.  I complained again, and I haven't heard a peep out of them in months - they must have received a really nasty letter.  One thing I really appreciate about this place is that management actually enforces the rules.  If people want to be noisy and inconsiderate, there are plenty of cheaper apartments in bad parts of town - that is where such people belong.  They can rent a place for $100 to $200 less and make all the noise they want, as long as they can deal with other people's noise and don't mind the occasional drive-by shooting.  I pay higher rent to live in a decent place in a good part of town, so I think I have the right to expect that my neighbors will be reasonably considerate.

A few years ago, they rented a nearby apartment to a family of lowlifes.  They left trash everywhere, and apparently their children enjoyed bullying other children in the apartment complex.  Those people were evicted within three months after numerous complaints.  Everyone in the area celebrated their departure.

Aside from this, I haven't had any real problems.  Of course, being an apartment complex, it is a very anonymous place, and I seldom meet any of my neighbors.  Over the years, I have actually become acquainted with a few, but currently there aren't any who I ever talk to.  I don't mind this; I prefer to live my own life without having other people intrude.
