Karl Henning

Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Still remember a fabulous concert he conducted here in Boston, with the BSO. Gosh, six years ago, already.

Shocking news...shocking to me. I hadn't realized he was 82!

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

O, dear, another one bites the dust! RIP

I've always admired Berglund's conducting. He will be missed.

This really is sad, although I didn't know he was so advanced in years either.  God bless his memory - may he be conducting the GSO in heaven (no, not the Gothenburg SO, the GOD Symphony Orchestra.)

I really like his recordings of Sibelius! :)

Another great artist that goes. I will remember his beautiful Sibelius cycle. And above all Kullervo !

Shamefully, I now anticipate a tasty Berglund box from EMI.  :'(

Same here, I thought he was younger.  I am about to order all his Sibelius' recordings on EMI, as what I currently have are somewhat incomplete.

Neville Marriner is even older and Colin Davis is similar in age.

I admire his EMI Sibelius cycle + an excellent Tapiola. His wonderful EMI Nielsen Symphony No 5 has never been on CD - a shameful state of affairs. His Vaughan Williams Symphony 6 was one of the few successful recordings IMHO of this enigmatic work.

His Vaughan Williams is amazing indeed, I also liked his Ma Vlast a lot.

Only just picked this news up RIP Paavo.

Conducted one of my favourite symphonies the Leningrad Symphony with the BSO on EMI LP :)

Yes, the sibelian Vaughan Williams Symphony No 4 is a magnificent performance, especially of the slow movement and the wonderful declamatory thud at the end.  I was reminded of Copland in places too.
