Been collecting records, lps, tapes, CDs for about 60 years now.  Concert music collection contains about 11,000 works - perhaps 10% of them are duplicates and around 2200 composers.  Do not care for atonal, 12 tone and other forms of musical noise.  In the last 15 years have concentrated mainly on music by forgotten or neglected composers - mostly 19th century.   We have certainly been blessed with a plethora of recordings recently. Can share some works from radio broadcasts over the years.  Such as the 4 Piano Concertos by Halfdan Cleve that have not been recorded commercially.  Have had season tickets of one sort or another to the Minnesota orchestra since the 1957-58 season and have been an orchestra guarantor for many years.

Minnesota may not be the most populous State of the union but it sure is well represented here at GMG. Welcome!

Welcome, Mn Jerry.  :)

Minnesota must have a ban on honking...

Coco

Living on an intersection, it's my experience that the honking is almost always tonal. :D

But if you go north of the border, the honking are sometimes spectrual.

Oh well this ol' atonalist welcomes you to the forum! :)

Howdy Jerry! Greetings from Vienna, Austria. Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who can't listen to that Twelve-tone technique stuff.  8)

For me it's like vodka - I really have to need something strong!

Welcome, Jerry, hope you'll enjoy the discussions here as much as I do. And I've never even heard of Halfdan Cleve - a completely new name to me, even though I'm a big enthusiast of romantic piano concertos!

For those who come back for another peek, here's the link to Cleve's PConcertos 1,2,3 & 5.   https://rapidshare.com/files/1727896720/Halfdan_Cleve.rar

If you go for the download, be prepared to be patient.  It's a 200+ meg file  and they make you wait for your download.

Now, speaking as some were of having to listen to non-music, we were at Orchestra Hall last night for a stunning performance of Mahler 6 with Vanska conducting.  But we had to endure the Trumpet Concerto #1 by Linkola (whoever that is......).  Well actually for me, 25 minutes of any concert piece with a trumpet would be about 20 minutes too long.

And next week another in the Beethoven Piano Concerto recording series with Yevgeny Sudbin - this time the 3rd.  And a Sibelius 2nd.  Should be another great program.

Hi Jerry, and welcome. I have a number of friends and family in Minneapolis, and some of them were also at that Mahler 6th concert - they all said it was terrific. The Minnesota Orchestra is one of my favorites, and I always try to hear them when they come to New York.

Anyway, welcome again and enjoy yourself here.

LOL!

I think "UNmusical noise" might be more accurate or at least descriptive of the problem ;)

Greetings. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks, eyeresist.   It's not that I don't like trumpets - I just don't think most of the brass instruments lend themselves to long concert pieces.  Exception:  French Horm.    Louis Armstrong is a much better place for longer trumpet solos.  And others.

Been to your fair city for two vacation visits but sadly did not get to attend any kind of performance at the famous opera house.   But do have a good friend who was a Rotary exchange student back when my kids were in school, who lives in Paddington.

Cheers from Minnesota.

Louis Armstrong's works tend to run much shorter than 25 minutes. Don't know how I'd like them at that length.

For the same work, Louis Armstrong's performance seems to last less than 25 minutes while others seems much longer.

I'm starting to think I'm in the wrong forum here.  Several days ago I started a thread on Halfdan Cleve and posted a link to an upload of 4 of his 5 piano concertos which are not available commercially.   (link is at the top of this thread as well).

So far, there hasn't been one response on that thread.  So I'm kind of coming to the conclusion that folks here aren't much interested in discussing obscure and forgotten composers.   :-[  Which is my area of most interest since I got tired of the workhorses about 50 years ago.
