I'm Greg from Richmond, VA. Although I frequent this site as a reader, I have finally decided to join the discussions.

First off, thank you to all the posts I've read that have helped me find the ideal recording of a favorite piece, or even introduce me to a new composer.
I studied music at school in the past, but now it's just a passion to listen and study(wish I could get paid for that). Have a family of musicians, one is actually a professional playing with some major orchestras! Very proud of that, sorry to brag.

I listen to a lot of Baroque and 20th Century, favorite composers are Rameau, Mozart, Berlioz, Ives, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Martinu, Glass & Dusapin. Long list, I know, but there's too much music to narrow it down to three or four.

Anyway, I look forward to chatting with some of you, and learning more about this wonderful art form.

Greg, Welcome. I hope you continue to enjoy your time here. Good that you have decided to join us and let us draw on your knowledge. With that list if dispirate composers, there will be plenty of threads you will be able to contribute to....or to start up. I look forward to reading you.

HI J.Z.,
Those 4 composers are great! I am still discovering Martinu, but was moved by the first piece I heard from him, and still one of my favorites "Promenades for Flute, Violin & Harpsichord"
Forgot to add Poulenc to my list, another personal favorite.

I am Johan (that's easier). I am a great lover of orchestral music, especially symphonies. And I don't mind the addition of soloists and a chorus... So, with Prokofiev for example, it's not only his symphonies I love (3, 4 (original version) and 6 in particular), but also his music for Eisenstein's films Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible. Apart from the composers we have in common, I love Wagner, and Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler, Sibelius... the list goes on. There is a lot of wonderful music!

Great choices! I also prefer Prokofiev's original 4th over the revised version. I find myself listening to his 7th symphony more than any other these days.
I love all of Sibelius's 7 symphonies, they're wonderful.

Welcome! I expect we shall converse on Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams and perhaps Mozart. Can you say which recording(s) of Prok's 7th you prefer? I like the Malko.

Hi there,

Based on performance and interpretation alone, I have to put Tennstedt's recording of the 7th as my top choice, I also prefer Prokofiev's original softer ending over the loud/victorious ending and Tennstedt really pours on the drama with that.
My second choice is Previn/LSO, great sound quality, wonderful balance, really highlights Prokofiev's orchestration abilities.

. . . I also prefer Prokofiev's original softer ending [to the Seventh Symphony] over the loud/victorious ending . . . .

Absolutely!

I haven't really decided between the two versions of the Fourth, which in general does not grip me the way others in the cycle do.  Lately my Prokofiev listening has mostly been the piano sonatas played by Anne-Marie MacDermott.

I also really enjoy his 3rd symphony, such a dark and beautiful piece.  The Muti/Phila recording is fantastic.
The piano sonatas are great, I'll need to checkout MacDermott's recordings. I have Bronfmans, which may not be ideal but they're good.

Maybe someone can help me...

I am having trouble figuring out how to post an image into my post, for example an album cover.
Any help is appreciated.

Thank you  ;D
