Ok, so what's the best/your favourite recording/performance of this work? It is one of my favourite works and I'd be interested to know. I like the 1965 Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia version and recently acquired a live 1942 version conducted by Bruno Walter with the NYPO in a fascinating boxed set of Barber's music.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I second the Schippers disc, an essential Barber disc in any case.

There's a recording in the NYP Bernstein Live box.

Choices for all the Essays together seem to be Slatkin or Zinman Järvi (Zinman does not have the Third Essay).

I really like Alsop's Essays and her set can be bought quite cheaply nowadays.

Thanks John and Daverz. I thought this was another candidate for my 0 response threads.  :)
I do have the Schippers CD so must fish that one out. Have recently ordered the Jarvi second hand too.
PS silly me - my 'Ormandy version' is actually conducted by Schippers.  ::) it is a great performance.
