I had that for supper the other night!

:D Maybe I should try this again: we need Ligeti and a few others on that list

Maybe the strategy should be to push the front-runners over the top, and open up capacity that way.

Sorry that the LvB I voted down was yours, Tasos![/font]

Not to worry, I'll sneak it in again later in the year!  8)

Exactly.

Leading the field currently:

QuoteBartók: Sonata for Two Pianos & Percussion 4
Debussy: Sonata for flute, viola and harp 4
Haydn: String Quartet in D major, Op.64/5 "Lark" 4
Medtner: Violin Sonata No.2 in G major, Op.44 4
Mozart: Clarinet Quintet 4

Of the lot, we can in fairness call the Medtner a surprise (I know I've never heard the piece <g>) . . . that aside, though, all the rest clearly deserve advancement.  (And I recuse myself from the question of whether the Medtner is so deserving . . . just to be quite clear.)

Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Sorry I'm way late to this, I slept in and then listened to Mozart! ;D

The whole 7 points thing: as many said it has to be 7 points higher than the second highest one.  And yeah this game is indeed a slow one.  But it gives alot of time to think through our favorites. :)

The derec thing: I didn't make it mandatory and I promised not to change the rules after I added the 12 hour rule.  But I strongly recommend de-recing every time else we end up with new works not making the board, and anything put up on the board eventually making the list.

And one or two have clarified this right: the list is 100, the board is 25.  Yup slow game. ;D

Saving up points: NO!  Use it or lose it.  When Jeff carried over a negative point before, I didn't say anything because everyone was still getting used to the rules and I didn't want to be overly aggressive at the beginning... but yeah saving points doesn't strike me as balanced.  Also then I would have to start keeping track to make sure you're breaking the rules or not, too complicated. :)

DavidW

I knew that would come up!  If it's one player per part and reasonable small... sure... but I'll let Karl be arbiter on these decisions since he has a PhD in the subject after all! :D

For sure octets and nonets count, nonet transcription of Brahms Serenade (thinking of Brian's mystery clip) doesn't count.  I'm tempted to say no more than 9, but I think once you get that high the one player per part is the rule that will actually be violated.  If you're thinking Stravinsky's octet, that should be fine. :)

You know you're right... it's time to make it mandatory, else it will not be interesting.  Going to revise the rules.

Mendelssohn Octet +2

Question: do works for two pianos count?  (I'm thinking of such things as Visions de l'Amen, Rachmaninov's suites, and Brahms' two piano sonata that became the Quintet.)

I'm tempted to say yes, especially since even if we have a piano thread in the future, I bet it will be either solo piano or quickly solo piano will come to dominate... but I'll let Karl be the judge. :)

karlhenning

Oh, the pressure! : )

I consider the Ragtime definitely a chamber work.  I don't think of the need for a conductor as regulatory, there (I've seen Schoenberg's Septet conducted . . . and of course for Le marteau you would almost have to have a conductor).

In my mind, piano solo is certainly a separate category (in fact, piano students make a point of participating in chamber music ensembles, in order to learn how to coordinate with other musicians). Piano four hands (or, two pianos) is a sort of middle ground, and one could argue either way;  I am apt to think of it as an extension of piano solo (and perhaps on the basis of the earlier parenthesis . . . two pianists as a rule, as peas in a pod, tend to communicate with one another much easier than a pianist with, oh, almost any instrumentalist else).

So, if I am being appealed to:  let's rule dual-pianist works (unless other musicians are also involved. of course) out for the present thread.

Yup the bunny returns! :)

And there you have it Ragtime-- in, piano duos out. :)
