It also has to be said that the Busoni concerto isn't particularly representative of his output, particularly of his later works. It doesn't have a lot in common with the brooding modernism of the second Sonatina or the Nocturne symphonique, nor the near-mystical aspects of Doktor Faust and related pieces, or the extreme introversion of the Berceuse elegiaque, for examples.

I'm not sure - there are plenty of pages in the score which are very close in tone and sound and look to some of the later scores you mention. The Busoni harmonic world is very present in the concerto, in fact. Both the Berceuse and the piano concerto were reworked by the composer in his masterful piano Elegies and there is no stylistic jarring when that happens - they both come from the sme source, that same ambiguous major-minor harmony. I hear the Busoni concerto as a journey - Busoni saw it that way too, I think, hence the mystical engraving he had put at the front of the score - and though it starts somewhere between Brahms and Verdi and the later Busoni it goes quickly to other places, the same sort of places Busoni inhabited in most of his music.

So when this list (and the chamber music list) is done, are we going to poll for favourite recordings? When the results are in, perhaps we could issue a CD of "GMG's Choice" and make lots of money!
