You may! Though it risks me getting embroiled in arguments with those who love those pieces, so let me say staight off that both are works I would defend in other contexts, and it is only the strength of some of the competition which makes me vote against here.

In the case of the Villa Lobos - it's an interesting piece, there is lots in it which I find fascinating and appealing. But in the final analysis I just don't think it is a particularly strong work, not looked at all-round - it's all only IMO after all - and something in me rankles at the thought of it being 'promoted' when pieces which are unarguable masterpieces are languishing lower down. Not that I always vote for those 'unarguable masterpieces' myself - one only gets so many votes, so I tend to use my + for those I feel most personaly strongly about and to hope that the masterpieces with more general appeal - the Mozart concerti, say - get enough votes from elsewhere.

In the case of the Penderecki - well that was a specific case of A v B, to me, and arose partly because I wasn't really voting on that thread, and turned up late to see Janacek's 2nd Quartet, a work which may well be simply my favourite piece music, a piece that is of absolutely iconic significance to me personally, loitering around in a lowly position. Miles above it I saw the Penderecki, which is a perfectly fine piece of chamber music, I think, but which to me is not anywhere near in the same league as so many of the masterpieces on the list. And it seemed very wrong to me - wrong that such a potent, blazingly human, vibrantly alive, generous, brave and no-holds-barred piece as the Janacek should be placed low down on any list, let alone that a work which I feel is comparatively knowing and hedging-its-bets should be so much higher. I mentioned that at the time, as I voted + for the one and - for the other. Maybe my doing so made other people think there was something odd about the board positions at that time, I don't know, but in any case I was pleased to see that within a very short time the Janacek had rocketed up the board and was 'promoted'.

Now, once again, it's all IMO, and I'm not usually one to vote against anything - I have nothing really against either of these works you ask about . But there are works which I will defend to the hilt, and it is more the playing off of these against other works on the list which determines my - votes.

Thank you!  (Although I have to admit that I don't fine anything like what you hear in the Janacek, and really think the Penderecki is a superior piece of music all around....but chacun a son gout and all that....for instance, it would never occur to me to put anything by Messiaen on this list)

Strange, to me, that the Turangalila - a popular, tonal, and ultra-accesible work, should have garnered so few votes, whilst Des canyons - an equally fine but somewhat less widely-appealing piece - should have whizzed to the top so quickly. Explainable, I think, by the fact that I shouldn't have put two Messiaen pieces on at once, there are clearly a few here who don't care for him at all who have been voting both pieces down (and that's fine, I'm only observing) whilst those voting for him, including myself, have been concentrating on getting Des canyons up the list. I certainly would have given Turangalila many more votes if I hadn't been giving them to works which were doing well. So maybe I will reintroduce it later...

Arrgh, someone removed Turangalila from the list, then, thinking it had been relegated, but actually it hasn't? I'd have given it my three votes and kept it at +1 if I'd known! [see my erlier comment]

Well, you should have been concentrating voting up Turangalîla (an endeavour in which I'd - and will -  gladly help), in my view a much superior work than Des canyons aux étoiles... I'm suspecting the latter's rapid ascent through the board might have to do in part with its subject matter (wild West Americana and all that jazz:) weighing rather more than its actual musical substance (which is not to say that it hasn't any).

Speaking of Turangalîla, let it be reminded that works don't get kicked off the board until they reach a -5. So, if unsure, don't take initiative with the board. That means you, MI!  $:)
