Classical guitar

Kontrapunctus

I'm a classical guitarist. Right now, I'm working on Segovia's transcription of Bach's Chaconne. I know his version seems a bit old fashioned, but I like the added notes, particularly since he was influenced by Busoni's piano version, which is one of my favorite pieces. I have long held off trying to learn it due to the purported immense difficulties. Sure, it's challenging, but a lot of it is not that bad, especially compared to some Bach keyboard transcriptions that I've attempted! I mainly play renaissance, baroque, and contemporary music. Most 18-19th century guitar music bores the stuffing out of me. (Oh, I suppose Sor's Grand Solo Op.14 is OK...). Some of my favorite newer pieces include "Mano a Mano" by Magnus Lindberg, Nikita Koshkin's Sonata, and Nicholas Maw's "Music of Memory." All three are hugely challenging, large scale works.

I don't know much about him, but he is getting a lot of attention right now.  Almost every review of his recent CD has commented on how hackneyed and predictable its slection of pieces are.  I believe the same concerns have been raised on this board.  So maybe a question about the classical guitar repertoire an whether it needs to be rejuvenated somehow?

It could be asked sensitively to avoid embarrassment.

To what extent is the repertoire you play and record a reflection of your own musical sensibilities and the expectations of the audience?

Is there repertoire that is not performed often that you would like to bring to the public attention? What is it and how would you achieve this?

Would be interested to know the answers.

Maybe you could ask if he approves of the way he's being marketed, and who seems to be the target audience. (I'd suggest it's people who know nothing about serious guitar music since he has chosen a mind-numbing program and his pretty boys looks seem to be the focus!)

It's actually the only question that I KNOW I will definitely ask!  :)

I am glad that it's not just me who noticed that while purporting to get rid of the classical guitar cliches, he seems to be perpetuating them.
