Wow, Bernstein, well I will put it on my list Tasos, thank you:)

Todd

I've only heard two, the Bernstein on DG and the Barenboim.  If you want your Liszt to sound like Mahler, Bernstein is your guy.  If you want your Liszt to sound like Wagner, then Barenboim is your guy.  I prefer Bernstein.

That's food for thought, thank you Todd. :D

I've heard two versions:

Mine was on LP. It was my first Faust Symphony. It was great but on the LP there was too much echo. I haven't heard the CD yet.
After sold my LP I bought this:

It is a great 2CD set. Solti's Faust has the common Solti-DECCA sound and performance: great dynamics, loud brasses. Maybe less soul.  I haven't heard Bernstein but I'm curious about it.

Solti is on my radar, heard good things about it, like very good sound.

I second this recommendation of MI. The other one I own that I do enjoy is Muti/Phil

I have not listened to the Bernstein, but have heard good things.

Thanks MI, the Barenboim comes highly recommended. could you tell me a bit about tempi and sound od all the recordings you mention?

Tell me a little more about Muti's approach if you please. I love his take on Tchaikovsky! sound tempi and interpretation would interest me!

The Barenboim is the best performance I've heard. I'm not really sure about tempi, but Barenboim's seems like it's a bit slower than the ones I'm used to hearing. There's just something about that performance that just feels right. Quite grandiose and bit heavy-handed, I love it. As for the Rattle and Chailly, I'll have to re-listen to these, but I remember both being highly detailed performances. As far as sound quality goes, Barenboim's has the best --- really warm. Chailly's sounds excellent as well but it's a bit brighter. The Rattle has good audio but not as good as Barenboim or Chailly.

Same here. It doesn't sound like Wagner or like Mahler to me. It sounds to me like Liszt but better.

Ferencsik has good Liszt recordings, I would suggest the masses and piano concertos also. Pure music. Unfortunately masses often suffer from murky sound. But it worth listen.

fortuitous topic   BBC Proms has it tonight (or Monday depending on your time zone.)
21:00
BBC Proms2011, Prom 23, Liszt
2/2. BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda in Liszt's Dante Symphony.

I've discovered that an old videotape recorder is great for recording broadcasts lasting over an hour.  You need not worry about turning the tape over.

My two favorite versions:

Kozma, Concertgebow Orchestra, Dorati

Mitchinson, BBC Orchestra, Horenstein

Regarding the Dante Simphony, my choice is simple: the sublime version of Sinopoli.

I will see if I can find them Val. Thank you for the options.

I like the first Bernstein recording with the NYP.  I have the one with Boston, but I haven't taken the time to compare them.

I have the Australian Decca Eloquence reissue of Ansermet's recording, in a double set with Two Episodes from Lenau's Faust (both 1967), the Battle of the Huns (Hunnenschlacht) (1959), and Magnard's 3rd symphony (1968). I'm not a great Liszt fan but I thought these sounded pretty good.
