Listening to a recent find. Apparently this one is already very hard to find. I am glad I found a decent used copy today, for his playing is excellent. Very aristocratic playing from this gentleman. He is so classy that you don't realize how much power and technique he is holding in reserve until he unleashes it and knocks you out of your seat. Very clean playing too. This guy's the real deal.

What else do I need to hear from him?

He's apparently one of Virgin's house pianists.   He's done chamber music (mostly Brahms and Schubert)with the Capucon brothers and others;  the Brahms concertos with Paavo Jarvi and the Frankfurt RSO; some Brahms solo works that I think are now OOP for which I've seen scattered positive comments, and a just released Goldberg Variations.  There may be some other recordings.  I don't know if you "need" to hear him, but from what I've heard (some of the aforementioned chamber music and the Brahms concertos) you need not worry about throwing out your money if you do get them.

My exposure to Angelich is limited to his LvB on Mirare.  Well played, but ultimately I sold it off.

Thanks, can you explain what you mean here?

Mostly I meant that I think he is worth listening to, although  you probably won't end up including him in your Great Pianists Hall of Fame.

I've heard him several times. He's been most impressive in Bach and Schumann, and I can see he is about to release some Goldberg Variations. A Kreisleriana at Wigmore Hall a few months ago was very good.

I really enjoyed a concert where he played the Paganini Variations a few years ago, and one with some Brahms Violin sonatas with Capucon. But neither recording has been special for me, though the Variations have grown on me more and more with each epeated listening. The Brahms trios  CD is good though.

I can let you have some bootlegs if you want, including the Wigmore Hall with the good Schumann.

I have some of is Brahms stuff with the Capuçon bros and my feeling is he is the weak link in the recordings. I find him rather stolid and I wasn't able to detect any magic in his playing. He could be a totally different person live.

I thought he was very crisp, light,...all the words like that,... in the Schubert Trios. Maybe this is the pocket of his style?

The Brahms Piano Quartets got a slightly different response, but I am very intrigued by this.

Yea, whoops, NOT Angelich on the Schubert! :-[

Mandryka

He's performing the complete Liszt Années in Roque d'Anthéron on Aug 7 -- I'll try to record it. I used to have the recording. which was slow.
