I went to a concert yesterday of jazz-opera... not a complete success but there's lots of potential with this combination.

I'm a massive fan of music which blurs boundaries, and I thought I'd share some of my favourite jazz-classical combinations and get more recommendations from you guys! I warn you though, I have a LOT of these recordings, so I may split them out over a few posts.

So here are just a few of my favourite or most notable CDs...

I still like Mingus Epitaph.

That's not really what I meant... I'm talking about classical pieces which have been appropriated by jazz musicians. I will check it out though.

"Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis is the recording that springs to my mind, with the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez"and music from Da Falla's "El amor Brujo".
Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.  ~ Henry David Thoreau

Yes, love that one, a classic! Don't forget Jim Hall's version of Concierto de Aranjuez...

Keep them coming, although I'm getting the distinct impression that not many people here listen to classical compositions played by jazz musicians...

The most amazing one is Herbie Hancock's take on Ravel's Concerto in G. In fact, it is the only one I really like. I like it so much I think it is so much better than the authentic takes, the classical takes. Amazing stuff!
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Wow, yes I remember that, I haven't listened to that recording in years... I'll have to go search for it now!

You're going to absolutely need to hear Anders Koppel's Saxophone Concerto No 2. No 1 is merely OK, but the second is a totally brilliant fusion of jazz tunes and classical form - probably the "21st century Gershwin"!

I will put it onto my to-buy list, but I'm primarily more interested in classical compositions reworked by jazz musicians!
