Now that the Favorite Symphonies thread is almost finished, I'm open to running another GMG Favorite thread, but only if people actually are interested in one.

If I do, I'll use the same four positive votes/two negative votes used in the Symphonies, but not the diversity restrictions and not the "consensus choices" which left some people confused or unsatisfied.
I will, in lieu of participating in the voting myself, make the first 10-15 nominations myself (starting them all at 01), and then restrict myself to moderating.

BTW, if you want to participate but feel the system used by Wanderer in his threads or the original system used in the Favorite Chamber Works thread is better, please say so in the responses.  If enough people agree with you, I'll use it.

The Orchestral Works thread would include anything that's not a symphony or concerto, as defined in the threads devoted to those categories.  Baroque Era works would be eligible, but I'll assign an arbitrary limit to the Bach Cantatas, probably five, simply because he wrote so many good ones we could have a list of 100 just by sticking to Bach. (That limit would not affect the Passions and other oratorio works.)

I'd be interested in an Orchestral Works game :) - don't think I'd be able to participate in a favourite Opera or Choral Works game though as I dont know enough of those type of works!  :'( .

I had to stop participating after I realized I was getting irritated (so much so that I don't even open the threads anymore). A series of polls would be faster and something I would particiapte in.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Wanderer

I'd be interested in any one of those that you'd care to start (I was thinking of starting an opera thread myself, too).

Amen!  0:)

Due to a forced absence from GMG during the summer, I realized that the minor "irritation" from the voting process was something I did not need.  At first it was fun, but in the end I took a deep breath and thought: "It really does not matter!"   ;D

Amen bis. I enjoyed participating in the first threads of this type - the piano concerto one and the chamber one - but became disenchanted with the whole repeat-voting process and the practical application of the idea. I too went away on holiday and came back feeling that I really didn't need them any more; I too haven't opened one since.

I've started the whole thing by copying it from TC, and even I'm tired of it!  I haven't even participated in my own thread in a month or more! :D  That being said something short and sweet, specifically the top 5 Bach cantatas would be fun, I would do that.

However, I think that polls are the way to go.  Look at the # of participants in the gmg fav threads and compare it to just say the Mozart operas poll... many more participants in the latter, and thus more representative of the forum as a whole.

Sorry, the laborious voting process of the "favourite" threads is a turn-off.

Regarding polls, it was interesting to compare the results of the "5 favourite Shosty symphonies" vs "favourite Shosty symphony", what with some favourites receiving hardly any notice in the latter poll.

The new erato

Not interested. To timeconsuming, and not valueenhancing, they seldom turn my attention to works I don't already know.

I think your system was best, except "+4 for one symphony" final modification.

Nevertheless I'm not interested in new threads like that.

Yeah, I participated in the GMG Favorite Concertos thread and it was just a headache, because on several occasions when I made a post somebody else made a post before me and I had to go back and recalculate the results which was tiresome. Needless to say, I won't be taking part in any of these types of threads again. Now, polls, on the other hand, are sometimes fun and can actually promote conversation.

My sentiments exactly.  I do feel that some of the members involved in the GMG Favorites threads treated the process as a relatively long-term game to play with the use of "strategy" to influence the results.  I hate games of this sort; bring on the polls!

I particiated in the Chamber and Piano Concerto ones but got bored after a while.  Now it seems only a few people participate so they no longer represent GMG Favoirites, but the favorites of three or four posters.

Kind of meaningless, IMO.

:)

I sure hope that nobody tries to promote those lists as being "official" in any sense.

Where is the Favorite Segerstam Symphony poll?
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

The "Favorite" threads are not my cup of tea, either -- I was away from GMG for quite a while, and I admit it took me a good long time to figure out how those threads even work; anybody who isn't a regular would probably open the thread and think it's a bunch of gibberish.  If there was some way to automate all the adding & subtracting & editing, perhaps it might be fun, but otherwise it's too much like filling out your taxes, or playing an old-school strategy game without the corresponding satisfaction of global domination.  YMMV, of course -- if y'all enjoy it, then by all means go for it.
Now, a poll I can do -- I'll offer my ill-informed opinion on most any subject ;D

Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.

The results are rather decisively against having a new thread, so I won't start any more.
I agree with several of the criticisms expressed, by the way, although I think had more people joined in and stayed on, the negatives would have been less prominent.

I do have another thread idea, but it won't necessarily involve a poll, and definitely won't involve voting as done in the Favorites threads--but I need to work out the details, probably in a few days.
I'll ask everyone to nominate a work, and if a certain number of people "second" the nomination, it will go on the list.  That's all.  What type of work I'll ask you to nominate will be revealed when it will be revealed :)

^ Sounds like more of the same, to be honest.

If someone makes it, I'm voting for Symphony 212.

I don't tend to be interested in consensus lists (at least once I have more than a cursory understanding of an area).  So individual lists and choices tend to interest me more, and most of the lists were a bit predictable as consensus things tend to be.  Some more individual choices had interest for me like the Fanny Mendlessohn piano work and the York Bowen concerto, though they could have turned up in threads on lesser known piano works or concertos anyway.
