One of Sweden's most significant composers, Sven-David Sandström, passed away yesterday, june 10th. He was 76 years old.  Sandström wrote over 500 works  –  opera, choral works, chamber music and symphonies. He wrote also a lot for church.

Sandström's music is not for the faint of heart. His big choral utterances may be hard on the stomach, but one is left with the feeling these ol' grey cells got quite a workout. I recommend thse two productions (2 discs each - Sandström doesn't leaves you off the hook easily):

He could also indulge in lighter, more palatable fare. I recommend this disc of concertos:

San Antone

Passion of St John

I fail to see why this beautiful music is "not for the faint of heart".  I don't know much of his output, and am sadden to hear of his passing - but from what I can tell from this Passion, he is well worth investigating.
