Spotted Horses

Quote from: DavidW on May 29, 2024, 11:35:22 AMThanks to streaming, sample listening is blissfully a thing of the past!

Before internet stores, I had to form opinions based on the album cover. (Admittedly, it was a beautiful 12 inch by 12 inch cover.)

I actually got into Mahler on the basis of this cover:

But I didn't think anyone else would be interested in those opinions.
Exactly. Just because one thinks it doesn't mean one needs to share it.

Karl Henning

Quote from: DavidW on May 29, 2024, 11:31:30 AMThat is the one!  And he would keep changing his opinion.  He did send me a box set of Schnittke symphonies though, which I did enjoy and made me a fan (even though I usually stick to the string quartets).

I remember Utah Bill (Pier). Made his acquaintance on a predecessor (Classical Insights iirc - or was it "Insites"?) of this forum and used to exchange e-mails with him.

I was also on ClassicalInsites. I remember when it disappeared the crowed reconvened on a series of other discussion boards, one of which was hosted by amazon.

Sergeant Rock

I've been hit with a double whammy, diagnosed with two conditions that have radically changed my life: deep vein thrombosis and Parkinson's disease.Neither prevents me participating in this great place but I just haven't felt up to it.

Thanks to you all who commented on my absence. And a special thank you to Karl who emailed me, asking me if all was well.
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Welcome back, albeit with sober news, and hoping for the most positive outcomes possible. Just know you're a welcome presence here, any time you feel like it.

Jean Delville - a Belgian.

Scriabin - Poème du Feu

In 1908,  Scriabin relocated to Brussels, and there met Delville. Scriabin had been introduced to Theosophy three years earlier.
When Scriabin composed his fifth symphony, Prometheus or "The Poem of Fire" in 1909-1910, Delville created the cover art for the score.

I am very sorry to read this Sarge. I haven't posted here for ages (no special reason - just nothing interesting to say), but I do call in now and then, and read what others have said, and so I spotted your post. Let me say clearly here how much I enjoyed all our conversations in the past - mostly about Elgar and Wagner as I recall - and I thank you for all of that. I also hope you can continue to spread your intelligence, knowledge, wit and wisdom here.
I offer my very best wishes, even though I know things must be terribly difficult for you.
Cheers,
Alan

I'm very grieved to hear of your health troubles. Although we've never met, I feel you as a member of the family. Your intelligence and humanity come across in your postings here, you're the Pierre Monteux of web posting. I can well understand that visiting here is not high on your list of priorities, but you should know that your participation here is greatly appreciated.

You have certainly been missed, and it's great to have you back,  but it's saddening to hear about your diagnoses. I send you my best wishes and hope that you'll find the strength to overcome the illness (and also to visit GMG - at least occasionally).

My local grocery store has been posting the wine advocate scores.  Everyone wants to feel that they bought a good deal!  Well... I guess I'm guilty of that too...
