"We enjoy having tourists here, it's a big part of the Vermont economy, and we want people to enjoy the natural beauty, visit the vendors and the shops, and drive around" ...

Gerrorf moi laarnd!

Hm.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

I don't know whether or not you read the whole article, but it sounds like it has gotten out of control.

Sounds bonkers! Idyllic is only idyllic up to a point... after that, it is just Times Square with trees...

The point of the article is (I believe), that people have become obsessed with "likes"/being "influencers", etc. that any idea of civility...as in respecting road rules/people's property/not using a proper toilet!!  From the article:

"In a plea on GoFundMe, a team of organisers wrote: "[We have] experienced an unprecedented surge in Instagram and TikTok-fuelled tourist 'influencers'... [who] have damaged roads, had accidents, required towing out of ditches, trampled gardens, defecated on private property... and verbally assaulted residents." To date, the request has garnered 125 donations, and raised more than $22,058. "

Yes, indeed. Kind of what I was saying,  really. It may be idyllic in principle to have this unspoilt beauty spot where you go and take these Edenic photos, but too many thoughtless people will leave it looking and feeling like the middle of NYC - busy, noisy and littered. Not easy for those who live there, as it is a tightrope when your economy receives so much money from the same people.

I'll probably just look at the internet pictures 😂

There is beautiful foliage enough without needing to overpopulate that one spot. Really, the thing I loved best about visits to Vermont was seeing the stars with no light pollution.

We visited the Kielder Forest in the north of England some years ago, for that very purpose. Idyllic, dark sky location. Height of summer. Booked a woodland lodge. Packed a comfy blanket, took snacks, flasks of coffee.

Rained solidly for a week.

There's not a joy the world England can give like that it takes away...  ;D

I remember being in London one time (think that it was early fall) and it was unusually warm (80's) and people were flopped out in Hyde Park with their pants rolled up, etc., trying to get a tan!  🙃😄

Mirror Image told some of us a little while ago that he was leaving, but not deleting his account.

He then briefly reappeared for an extra little spat on this thread, and has now gone.

I could write a whole essay of my thoughts about the early stages of what went down on the Debussy thread (I never saw the escalation, but was already wincing slightly at turns of expression used by different people and thinking "oh don't say that"), but it's not really going to help.
I finally have the ability to edit my signature again. But no, I've no idea what I want to say here right now.
