Ouch! I am not sure if I could handle not being able to listen to music. Glad things got resolved for you Zauberdrachen! Are you celebrating with a listening marathon?  :D

Yes, thanks, it's been non-stop listening since I've improved.  Craved certain things :  Saint-Saëns' 3rd VC, Berlioz's Nuits among 'em and curiously an old Zombies song "Whenever You're Ready" (always liked their harmonies).  Have to go for a hearing test next week but think I'm ok.

DUDE!  I can sympathize!

Right now, everything is great!

We need more magic dragons here!   8)  So stay with us!

Thanks, Cato, sure hope it stays that way!!  Best to see a specialist - ENT - if it reappears; it pays to id the cause, if possible (sinus trouble, eardrum configuration, too forceful nose-blowing can force fluids up against it, etc) yes, I hit the books!  Hearing's too precious a gift to take for granted.  Don't forget ear protection when mowing, using the blender, power tools, and always good to take a decongestant before boarding planes if you've had in-flight agonies.  The latter have cost me more hearing than anything else.

Welcome back party!!

I can relate to your story about ears being the second-most unclean part of my body. For the first 19 years of life, I (and my parents, initially) cleaned them the worst way you can, Q-Tips, which just pushes stuff back farther into the ear. There was eventually so much gunk that one night with a "whumf" noise my left ear became completely deaf. Hearing returned in it an hour or so later, but I went to the clinic and got a professional cleaning. It's one of those things nobody really thinks about.

Hm, I wonder about the state of human ears during the middle ages.....

Brian got a professional cleaning. I wonder how people took care of these issues in the past...

Sorry, that was supposed to be funny!!

Q-tips = bad, when used for jousting in the ear canal.  Ears are supposed to be self-cleaning, but people differ in their production of earwax which, though designed to be anti-bacterial, anti-insect and vital lubricant, can be the source of trouble in itself.

:D  Larson also did a dog version of that cartoon.  In it 'Ginger' is being scolded by its master, but the dog at least hears its name :  "Ginger...blah,blah, blah, Ginger, blah, blah..."

Welcome back to health Zauber !  :-*  I can empathize. I have always had a lower level of hearing from the right ear -esp. noticeable when switching the telephone from one ear to another. But never have I feared becoming really impaired. Must be quite frightening.  :o

Thanks, André - I admit to being scared.  Had 'em before but these hurt the worst and my first rounds of antibiotics did not touch 'em.  The time o' year for them was peculiar as well and a first.  We should prob. have an ear care thread on GMG.

I just realized a member that I enjoyed talking with is missing and apparently has been missing for quite some time: Fafner.

He's been talking about dieting recently, so I figured that he just changed his name to something else.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Hmm, whatever happened to Octave? I haven't seen him post for a long time...    :(

Quote from: Cato on September 21, 2014, 11:02:10 AMYes, one fears a permanent condition: some people have a debilitating tinnitus for years and years: very depressing!   My hearing in the left ear was considerably weakened by the volume of the tinnitus (pronounced tin'-ni-toos in Latin, incorrectly pronounced ti-NITE-iss by our unenlightened types).  I recall being in the hallway and not understanding much of anything spoken loudly by several people.

I've had it since December 1998. It's high-pitched and hissy, and is exacerbated by eating white food. Nothing turns up the volume like eating rice. Pasta and anything made with flour and sugar are almost as bad, but seem like less obvious triggers the longer I have tinnitus. I usually pronounce it with the unenlightened emphasis on the second syllable. Saying it the Latin way sounds prissy, and I try to avoid sibilants when I can.

I miss hearing things people are saying. I keep closed captioning going on my TV at all times. I have a friend who mutters, perhaps passive-aggressively, and I wish I could turn his CC on.

As far as music goes, I'm much happier when the speakers are close to my head now instead of the typical speakers-across-the-room positioning. I've bought a couple of wireless speaker sets from Bowers & Wilkins, and they have made such a difference. I don't know whether I just like listening to audio files (not MP3s) more than CDs, or if it's just that the music has never been this close to my head before (other than on headphones, which will never be more than a compromise for me), but I have not enjoyed listening to music this much in many years.

I hope your TIN-nih-tuus is not making you crazy, Cato.
