James is cool, the Walt Kowalski of this board.

QuoteIf good old James is gone, I for one am going to miss him. Despite his deaf spots towards Mozart and Beethoven, and his excessive devotion to the later Stockhausen, he was never namby-pamby about his beliefs

Agreed.

Quoteand in my opinion he was fundamentally right most of the time about contemporary music.

Not agreed. That's what I find genuinely sad - when someone who's been so open minded and enthusiastic about music that was angrily dismissed by cranky elitist geezers back when it was new.. becomes one himself.

You don't remember when he called me...

Ouch!  I never saw that: after such an insult, I would have banned him or demanded an apology.  I take no prisoners on idiocies like that: such contumely shows a severe lack of imagination, as do all such cacologies.

What's a Walt Kowalski?

I've seemed to have taken on this philosophy for the past year or so: whenever a person puts you down in a nasty manner, it's merely a reflection of their own character and nothing else. I wouldn't expect James to apologize for anything he's said, but the fact that he didn't exercise restraint, and disregarded my own feelings, demonstrates his lack of character and humility.

You don't remember when he called me a cunt on the 'Greatest 20th Composer' poll/thread? Oh, I do have a thick skin and I can overlook almost all his 'attacks' if you want to call them that, but I thought this was out-of-line (even for him).

Actually, I don't.

So maybe he just doesn't like some of the music you like. I don't like that Ixion thing you posted by Langguard either. So what. My disliking it is not going to change your mind, nor are you going to change mine.

But what I don't get is why James, who just days ago had a post count of 9000+, now is down to just under 2000. Did he go on a mass delete binge?

Why don't we call a moratorium on all that? If you want to interact in a positive manner on the level of music, then by all means do so. Otherwise, take the high road and if you are piqued by something he writes, then get over it and move on.

I like that. This forum and the whole internet would be a nicer place if more people would follow these suggestions.

I suppose he has deleted the larger part of his offensive posts.  ;D

He's a dick.

Is that any better than being a cunt, and should you not apologize for calling James a - what was it? - "contumely that shows a severe lack of imagination, as do all such cacologies"? Or is it only reprehensible when James does it?

Oh, I agree with you about that! But you can be right about a principle and wrong about a composition.

Bien sûr.

Precisely, and people should not hide behind cloaks of self-righteousness by blaming James for what they do just as shamelessly themselves. If you're so weak that you can't take a little criticism of work you hold dear, then step aside and let the adults play. Perhaps the stuff you consider so "great" is not as good as you think it is, and perhaps you can learn from listening to others' comments.

After all, professional critics don't hesitate to say they think a work is worthy or not, and the world doesn't come to an end if a few sacred cows get poked here and there.

Exactly!  Isn't as if the professional critics were always right.

Well, and part of why he was amusing is, how utterly tone-deaf he was to this.

I just find it amusing (and instructive) that when James does certain things, the membership is up in arms, his posts are deleted, it's a capital crime, I'm insulted, etc., etc.; but when something similar is done to James, no one raises an eyebrow.
