For Berg, give me Lulu Suite, the Violin Concerto, Seven Early Songs, Altenberg-Lieder, Wozzeck, and the Three Pieces For Orchestra.

I also include Lyric Suite and the Piano Sonata.

And in those 2 posts, nearly Berg's entire output was mentioned...

This is true.
But then I would say Berg is batting close to perfect with his small output.  ;D

What recording of Chamber Concerto have you heard, John?

I own several: Boulez (I & II) and Sinopoli. It doesn't matter which one I've heard, because I just don't like the music itself.

I'm not a fan of SQs or solo piano music, but I do like the version Berg orchestrated of Lyric Suite. That's some stirring stuff there.

Well, fine.  :P ;D

Thread duty...
Is your favorite composer Beethoven?  Still no.

I love all those works you mention as your favourites of his. My absolute favourite Berg piece would probably be the Three Pieces for Orchestra, probably because of the Mahlerian hammer... ;) Do not know the Chamber Concerto that well, will have a listen to that soon and will let you know what I think!

Yes, Daniel Three Pieces for Orchestra is incredible. The Chamber Concerto just doesn't work for me. It doesn't haunt me like I think Berg's music should.

All of the posts in this thread can go eat a banana. Except for my posts.

You've now got me wondering, Greg. Are your posts bald, like the King of France? And does the King of France eat bananas?

'Haunting' is certainly a great word to describe Berg's music, some of the most haunting ever written! :)

I like the way MTT describes Berg's Three Pieces for Orchestra:

My posts have hair, but only when they feel like it. The King of France never has any hair, even when he feels like having some.  8)
