This is an interesting recording, I think; Finnissy effortlessly switching between Renaissance-era-but-with-something-not-quite-right and dissonant modern styles.

Not sure I'd listen to the whole of it in one session again, but there's plenty to enjoy here.

Michael Finnissy turns 75 today. Over the years, his works have given me much pleasure, from his massive The History of Photography in Sound (1995-2001), to his arrangements of English country tunes and Gershwin. Below, Ian Pace in "A Foggy Day (In London Town)," with beautiful black-and-white film footage of old London.

More Finnissy to celebrate his birthday: Snowdrift (1972) performed by Mari Kawamura, June 20, 2019 at Jordan Hall, Boston, at the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. He's been quite prolific, writing for all types of forces, but his solo piano output might be my favorite of all.

Extraordinarily beautiful: "O, Schöner Mai," the second of Finnissy's three J. Strauss waltz arrangements from 1967 (rev. 1989), written for Nic Hodges. (Not sure if Nic is the uncredited pianist here.) In any case, always fun to follow along with the score, scarcely 3 minutes long.
