Scottish avant garde composers are furiously composing atonal bagpipe pieces as we speak.
How will we be able to tell? ;)

And of course I must pedantically point out that Scotland isn't the only place to have bagpipes.

Atonal/bagpipe....isn't that redundant?

I protest at your use of the words 'bagpipes' and 'fart' in the same sentence.  Kindly pipe down with that or I will have to burst you.   :o         :D

Non-Scot reaction to Mahler's 8th: holy cow this has like every music instrument imaginable, it's crazy!! :o

Scotsman reaction to Mahler's 8th: symphony of a 1,000 and no bag pipes!? ::)  What a rip! ;D

On these grounds, clearly you need to buy a disc that includes Peter Maxwell Davies' An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise.

See the last couple of minutes below for why:

I am a Scot and would pay good money not to have to listen to bagpipes....or the chanter.

What composer should I dig into with a new purchase tomorrow?  And what work? :)

But possibly the only to admit it.

I'm calling it a three way tie since they are so close and going with Haydn, Berlioz and Mahler.  Won't buy until I'm home so feel free to inundate me with recs. :)

madaboutmahler

Mahler 5 (RCO/Chailly)
Mahler 6 (CSO/Solti)
Mahler 8 (Philharmonia/Sinopoli)
Mahler 9 Karajan

The top Mahler recordings I can think of at the moment. You probably have some of them that I mentioned anyway...

Oh yes, that Berlioz Requiem is a good'un. Spectacular sound, I enjoyed everything about this recording. The conductor surprised me, I would not have guessed it was his territory. He builds tension and splendour in the loud passages, but he equally shines in the many filigree, and gentle areas of the work.

I would emphatically recommend this release. Superlative on all accounts.

PS. The Hummel concerto disc mentioned above is also well worth seeking out.

Exactly, although in our countries we mostly try to forget it.  :D
